Attachment Theory and Practice (2 days)

Details

This 2-day workshop investigates the impact of disrupted attachment on the emotional, social and cognitive systems of children, particularly on how this affects behaviour and learning.

It also looks at the impact of attachment disruption on adult attachment styles and the importance of understanding oneself as an adult worker to allow for greater effectiveness when working with children and families.

Theories learned in Day 1 will be applied in Day 2.

Learning objectives
Day 1
•Learn the basic framework of Attachment Theory
•Understand the impact of disrupted attachment on the emotional, social and cognitive systems of a child and how this affects behaviour and learning
•Discover how childhood attachment affects adult attachment styles and the role of workers
•Explore the neurobiology of attachment and the impact of trauma (with reference to Dr Allan Schore)
•Learn how to facilitate moving from the individual to the family as a secure base
•Identify issues when working with children with attachment disruption

Day 2
•Analyse the characteristics of disrupted attachment
•Explore the effects on child functioning
•Identify specific characteristic traits of insecure attachment styles
•Investigate specific and broad adult reactions (as result of adult attachment style) to children with insecure attachment styles
•Discover how to structure a holding environment for children struggling with insecure attachment styles
•Learn how to bring theory into practice using a practical tool as guidance
