About the role

CAALAS is funded by the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department and Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet to provide legal advice and representation to Aboriginal people of the Southern zone of the Northern Territory.  CAALAS has a team of lawyers and support staff who provide quality representation in a culturally appropriate manner in the areas of Criminal, Civil and Family Law.

POSITION PRIMARY RESPONSIBLITIES:

Primary Functions of the Senior Civil Legal Officer include providing quality legal advice and advocacy for Aboriginal clients on matters of civil law, as well as providing day to day supervision and caseload management of civil legal officers.

This is a challenging and rewarding opportunity for an experienced civil lawyer.  To excel in this position you would need to have:

  • 5+ years experience in civil law and be a barrister or solicitor admitted to practice in a State or Territory of the Commonwealth;
  • A sound knowledge of the NT civil legal system;
  • Experience in supervision and management of staff;
  • Ability to communicate with Aboriginal people and to advise and seek instructions in a culturally appropriate manner;
  • An understanding of the needs of Aboriginal people in relation to the legal system and a commitment to advocacy; and
  • Highly developed written and verbal communication skills.

 

CONDITIONS:

SALARY: $90,000.00 – $115,000.00 (including district allowance).

  • Additional 9.5% superannuation paid on base salary.
  • Salary sacrifice available.
  • Six (6) weeks Annual Leave.
