Founded in 2006, Victorian Opera has grown to become a state leader and national icon in the development of new opera and music theatre, training the next generation of operatic talent and staging works of the highest artistic standards. An agile and innovative arts company, Victorian Opera stages annual seasons of diverse and rarely staged repertoire, tours productions throughout regional Victoria and has now expanded to touring works nationwide and internationally.

As Victoria’s state opera company, Victorian Opera employs a dedicated team committed to redefining opera and building its future. Recently recognised with multi-year funding from the Australia Council for the Arts, Victorian Opera now has an exciting opportunity for an experienced professional to further develop its marketing and communications strategy.

List of Duties – The Marketing and Communications Manager will:

1. Generate audience growth and box office income for Victorian Opera through planning and implementing marketing and audience development strategies.

2. Ensure Victorian Opera’s media profile and brand awareness is maximised for the benefit of individual productions and the company as a whole.

3. Plan and implement campaigns for memberships (subscriptions) and single ticket sales.

4. Lead the marketing team at Victorian Opera to ensure the successful creation and timely delivery of marketing activity through all relevant channels.

5. Develop, implement, monitor and adapt a five-year marketing and communications strategy for Victorian Opera, which defines and strengthens the company’s brand.

6. Work with the Managing Director to set ticket prices and box office targets, prepare and manage marketing expenditure within agreed budgets and ensure Victorian Opera achieves the best possible return on investment from its marketing spend.

7. Generate creative marketing solutions to reach specific target audiences, including the use of new and emerging technologies.

8. Engage and collaborate with all relevant partners and suppliers to create mutually beneficial partnerships.

9. Plan and execute season event builds and oversee marketing and communications relationships with all external ticketing agencies and venues.

10. Understand, assimilate and be able to apply research to Victorian Opera’s audience data.

11. Ensure the ongoing success of the companywide implementation of Tessitura.

12. Cultivate close working relationships between the marketing department and all other areas of the company.

13. Undertake other duties as may be reasonably required from time-to-time.

The successful candidate will have:
• At least five years demonstrated success in arts marketing and communications. 
• The ability to articulate a long-term vision, while remaining focussed on day-today activities. 
• Extensive experience in making successful connections between potential audiences, the work on stage and the company as a whole. 
• A record of success utilising social media in a marketing context. 
• The ability to review, analyse and report on marketing campaigns and the capability to incorporate that analysis into future marketing activity. 
• A minimum of undergraduate level qualifications in marketing.
• The ability to prioritise short, medium and long-term priorities.
• The ability to plan and work creatively, both individually and as part of a diverse team. 
• Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills. 
• Demonstrable written and verbal communication skills.

Ideally they will also have:
• Experience in a producing, performing arts company. 
• Experience supervising staff and demonstrated leadership skills. 
• Experience using Tessitura or a similar CRM system. 
• A working knowledge and / or interest in opera. 
• A track record of innovation in audience engagement, with a particular emphasis on new technology.

This position

Reports to: Managing Director.

Supervises: Media & Communications Executive, CRM & Ticketing Executive and Marketing & Communications Coordinator.

Works closely with: Artistic Director, Executive Producer, Development Manager, Finance Manager.

Due to the nature of the Victorian Opera season, the successful candidate must be prepared to work evenings and weekends as required. Victorian Opera operates a Time in Lieu system to compensate for these additional hours.
