Guide to Giving of bushfire appeals

In response to the devastating bushfires that have torn through Australia, we have seen an outpouring of generosity to support communities in the fire affected areas. Hundreds of charities, individuals and businesses have stepped up to provide relief where they can, but many more people are looking for ways to help.

As many of you will know Pro Bono Australia’s flagship product is our Guide to Giving, which has established itself as Australia’s most trusted directory that connects donors with causes. With this in mind, we’ve compiled a list of bushfire appeals and charities you can donate to. Links take you directly to the bushfire appeal websites.

Please note inclusion in the list does not reflect an endorsement by Pro Bono Australia. To avoid known scams people should check with the ACCC’s Scamwatch

For more advice on how to donate to Australian bushfire relief, read Pro Bono News’ article hereFor anyone affected by the bushfires, the AskIzzy platform has been updated with all the latest bushfire support information.

Note:
Tax Deductible = These organisations have been endorsed as Deductible Gift Recipients (DGR) and can receive tax deductible gifts.

If you know of a bushfire appeal that we have missed, please let us know at news@probonoaustralia.com.au

The Forests Fighting Fund

Bushfires have devastated forests and wildlife, yet logging continues. So community group WOTCH, represented by Environmental Justice Australia, are taking this fight to the courtroom. The community group of citizen scientists from Victoria’s Central Highlands, has launched a Supreme Court case against VicForests to stop the state-owned agency from logging areas of unburnt habitat for threatened species impacted by the bushfires. The Forests Fighting Fund will provide critical funds for the WOTCH case and other legal support to protect forests and threatened species, and prevent more destruction of wildlife habitat following the devastating bushfires.

The Lord Mayor's Distress Relief Fund

This is an established method of providing funds for recovery/rebuild following large fires where people lose homes in WA, which has been established since 1961. City of Perth covers the overheads. This will be a substantive source of funds for the longer-term recovery and it is where the State Government has committed $2M. The fundraiser is over $7M to date, with people who have lost their homes able to apply for $25,000 short-term emergency assistance on Wednesday 10 February.

Uniting Church Moderator’s Bushfire Appeal

The Disaster Recovery Chaplaincy Network (DRCN) is an ecumenical network of chaplains established to assist people in NSW who have been affected by disasters and major emergencies within their communities. The network was established in 2009 by the Uniting Church (Synod of NSW and ACT) as a result of deliberations within the State Disaster Welfare Committee, which recognised the need for chaplaincy to complement the other welfare services within evacuation and recovery centres following major emergencies. The Moderator's Appeal distributes funds where they are most needed.

Uniting Vic.Tas 2020 Bushfire Appeal

We are aware that there are gaps or unmet needs emerging in material aid. At the same time, the impact of these bushfires and the devastation they have caused will be felt in these communities for years. Local needs will be very different across the fire-affected areas and will continue to change. We are encouraging people to donate money that we can then use to quickly respond to whatever is needed and calling for donations to support longer term relief and recovery efforts.
