Our Mission / Objective

Firmly believing that appropriate levels of care and support must be provided to those people with a mental illness in the Gippsland region, Barrier Breakers is committed to:

1. Protecting the dignity of those people with a mental illness.

2. Promoting and protecting the human and civil rights of those we assist.

3. Improving the quality of life of those affected by mental illness.

4. Advocating and proving a voice for those with a mental illness who have no voice.

5. Ensuring the adequacy and extent of mental health services in the Gippsland region.

6. Lifting the profile of mental illness in Government Budget considerations.

Our Services

Barrier Breakers Inc advocates for mental health at the systemic level by seeking to make mental illness and the associated challenges more widely known and understood by the general public, and by lobbying governments at all levels to improve the services, resources and funding available to the mental health sector.

At an individual level, our advocates step in when someone with a mental illness is facing a crisis situation that he/she is not able to resolve. The advocate works with the consumer and the authority involved until a satisfactory outcome is reached. Many of the consumers we assist with crisis advocacy are referred to us through other agencies.

Recognizing that deinstitutionalization resulted in a gaping hole in the availability of accommodation for people with chronic mental illness, and the desperate need for affordable, safe, long-term supported housing, Barrier Breakers partnered with several other agencies to develop a block of ten supported accommodation units in Traralgon, a model which we hope to duplicate throughout the Gippsland area.

Our Beneficiaries

People with a diagnosed mental illness who are facing a crisis situation are the direct beneficiaries of our service. Indirectly, their families, carers and surrounding communities also benefit.

Our systemic advocacy also benefits the broader community. It has been estimated that 1 in 5 people in Australia will suffer some form of mental illness in any given year. Through making mental illness more understood by the general community, we are helping to remove the stigma for all those people and those close to them.

OFFICE IN WONTHAGGI

Having recently opened a new office in Sale, we are now looking to open an office in Wonthaggi, where there is also an active chapter of Barrier Breakers. This will mean finding a suitable office space, fitting it out, and enlisting volunteers to staff it. If you are interested in helping in any of these areas, we would love to hear from you.

SUPPORTED ACCOMMODATION SALE AND WONTHAGGI

In partnership with other organizations we have been instrumental in developing a block of supported accommodation units for people with chronic mental illness in Traralgon. We are now looking to replicate this model across Gippsland, with Sale and Wonthaggi being our first targets.

If you have a business and would like to raise your social profile, you can sign up with GiveMatcher as a matcher, matching donations made to our organization up to an amount nominated by you.

Other support

We want people who will engage with Barrier Breakers on an ongoing basis. We invite you to apply for membership and become actively involved, and/or to sign up for our newsletter.
