Our Mission / Objective

Today Berry Street is the largest child and family welfare organisation in Victoria, helping nearly 14,000 Victorians over the past year. These children and young people have suffered great distress and significant harm growing up in families where violence, chronic neglect, substance abuse, mental illness and poverty have prevented them from having a good childhood. Berry Street never gives up doing whatever it takes for these kids because we believe that all children should have a good childhood – growing up in families and communities where they feel safe, nurtured and have hope for the future.

Our Services

Community – Programs focused on the early years, financial
inclusion and capacity building in rural communities.

Education  – We run an independent school with a
number of campuses, and an extensive range of other education support and
training programs.

Family Services Supporting parents to better care
for and nurture their children and help resolve conflict between parents and
their adolescents.

Family Violence – Delivering
responsive and flexible support options to women and children experiencing
family violence.

Foster, Kinship & Residential Care – When children
can’t live safely at home because of serious child abuse, neglect and
family violence, Berry Street provides the appropriate level of care.

Therapeutic – Through clinical services and
counselling programs we work with the distressed child or young person, their
family, carer and other services, to help them recover from their trauma.

Youth – Our youth services include case management,
outreach, leaving care, life skills, mentoring, and accommodation.

Our Beneficiaries

Projects in Progress

We know that a good childhood is the foundation for a healthy society and that whilst parents have the primary responsibility to provide their children with a good childhood, they cannot do this alone. All children have the same rights and fundamental need for safety, stability, love and support. The trauma experienced by the children and young people with whom we work adds complexity to meeting their needs, but we know it can be done and we never give up.

Berry Street continues to focus in two main areas:

  • The rights of all children to a good childhood; and
  • Supporting those children, young people and families with the most complex issues arising from their personal experiences of abuse, neglect or violence.
