Our Mission / Objective

At Cat Protection, we love cats and kittens with all our hearts and we want nothing more than to make them purr.

We have been caring for cats since 1958 … because every cat deserves a loving and responsible home.

Our mission is to find loving and responsible homes for cats in need; to improve the quality of life for cats by educating the community about socially and environmentally responsible cat care and ownership; to work actively with government and non-government agencies to promote and improve cat welfare; and to honour the unique relationship between people and cats.

Our vision is that every cat has a loving and responsible home.

We rely solely on the generosity of the community, so your support is vital in helping us to continue to care for all our kitties while they are with us.

Here are some of the ways you can support us:

  • Come to visit our cats and kittens at the Adoption Centre and find your furrever friend
  • Sign up to become a Member
  • Fundraise for us – create an event or join an existing one on Everyday Hero
  • Become a Regular Giver or give through your Workplace Giving Program
  • Become a Corporate Sponsor or Partner – sponsor a cat apartment for 12 months; volunteer; or organise a fundraising event with your staff
  • Support our Op Shop – donate your unwanted goods and come in and shop
  • Become a volunteer. Our Op Shop, cattery and foster care program all work with volunteers
  • Like us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/catprotectionsocietynsw
  • Remember Cat Protection in your will and leave a lasting legacy for cats of the future

Our Services

Cat Protection is a charity dedicated to cats and the people who love them.

We offer a range of feline care services from our purpose-designed, no-kill shelter in Newtown:

  • No-kill rehoming facility assisting previously owned and stray cats and kittens. This includes a foster care program for kittens (and when they are not orphaned, their mums) and rehabilitation for sick and injured cats, working closely with our vets to bring the cats back to full health and ready for adoption
  • Discount desexing programs for cats in the community
  • Re-uniting lost cats with their people
  • Information and advice on a broad range of feline welfare issues, from questions about basic cat care to more complex behavioural problems such as inappropriate toileting
  • Face-to-face education for all ages – free school holiday program for kids; information talks for cat owners (eg feline health and future planning for your cats); kitten kindy for families who have newly adopted a cat or kitten
  • Electronic information on cat care and health – factsheets on our website, tutorials on You Tube
  • Non-partisan contribution to the development of public policy on companion animals, including participation in government advisory committees and consultations
  • Advocacy for cats and their owners, for example, helping pet owners obtain pet-friendly housing
  • Participation in feline health and welfare research projects
  • Welfare program providing one-on-one assistance to cat owners in crisis.

How to help us

Wills and Bequests

The kindness of people who remember Cat Protection in their wills has provided the backbone of our funding since we began caring for cats in 1958. Bequests contribute between 40-50 per cent of our operating income each year.  We acknowledge with deep gratitude the kind-hearted men and women who have remembered Cat Protection and we honour their lives through our work.

If you have cats of your own it is important to make provisions for them when you are making or updating your will. Cats are considered property under the law and therefore Cat Protection recommends you speak with an understanding solicitor when deciding how to best provide for your cat should they survive you.

Further information, including how to plan for your cat, can be found on our website at www.catprotection.org.au/bequests or please call our office on 9519 7201

General Donations

Sydney’s only no-kill shelter just for cats, Cat Protection is a deserving recipient of funds because each year we help thousands of cats (and the people who love them) through a number of programs including rehoming, discount desexing, education and information. As an incorporated association, with ATO gift recipient endorsement and NSW Government-issued Authority to Fundraise, we are accountable to the public and our supporters. We invite any interested parties to visit Cat Protection (during adoption centre hours) and see first-hand the work we undertake. Our audited annual reports clearly demonstrate our results and efficiency and are available from our website and presented at our AGM and to the Director-General of Fair Trading.

Membership:

The more members we have, the more powerful our voice when we speak on behalf of cats. We are not a political or religious organisation – we just care about feline welfare. We will never share your details with a third party and members who have been active for more than 12 months are invited to attend our Annual General Meeting.

Members receive our quarterly full-colour magazine Cat Affairs keeping them up-to-date with our activities, and informed on issues about feline health and wellbeing, as well as follow-up stories on Cat Protection cats in their loving new homes.

Work with us

Volunteer with us

Cat Protection volunteers join a professional, caring organisation and have the satisfaction of helping to care for cats in a no-kill shelter until they find their loving ‘forever’ home. Whether by raising funds helping in our Op Shop, caring for kittens in their own home until they’re big enough to come to the shelter for adoption (all equipment provided) or providing direct assistance in our best-practice cattery, volunteers play a critical role in Cat Protection’s life-saving work.
