Our Mission / Objective

A LIFE LIVED WITH FRIENDSHIP,IS A LIFE FULLY LIVED.

Living with a disability can be difficult
– it can feel isolating, like life is going on
around you, without you.

Extended Families Australia exists to challenge
that – we’re a group of people who believe that
having joy in your life and being a part of your
community is important for everyone.

We support children and young people 0-30 and
their families in Melbourne and the Mornington
Peninsula to build friendships and connect with
their community.

No matter who you are or where you’re from,
there’s room for you and your family within
Extended Families Australia.

Our Services

We provide a range of service to children with a disability and their families including:
– Mates Program, supported by volunteer support
– ExtendABLE Program – sports, recreation and arts activities
– Parent support and friendship groups
– Camps
– Service Coordination Support

Our programs focus on social and community participation, health and wellbeing and independence.

How to help us

Wills and Bequests

Extended Families relies on non-government funding to thrive, plan for the future and grow. One of the most helpful ways for us to continue to achieve future stabiltiy and growth so that the organisation may carry on with our vital role is to establish a pool of money through bequests by supporters of Extended Families. This money is invested and the proceeds directly benefit children with disabilities and their families. If one of the causes you care about is Extended Families, you may consider making a bequest to us after providing for your family and loved ones. Extended Families have a large waiting list of families requesting support. Additional funds will enable more children and families to receive the support they need.

General Donations

Your support can take many forms from providing financial support through to helping with events and providing volunteers to be matched with families. Extended Families is happy to tailor a program that suits your company or individual  wishes and looks forward to working closely together to bring the gift of friendship to children with disabilities and their families.

Work with us

Volunteer with us

The main role of an Extended Families volunteer is to provide friendship and support to a child who has a disability and their family. To do that, a volunteer commits to a minimum of 12 months to spend time with a child on a regular basis—either in the family’s home, the volunteer’s home or in a community setting—and works with the family and the Extended Families Regional Coordinator to maximize the child’s physical, emotional and developmental opportunities.

Extended Families’ comprehensive assessment process helps us to successfully match a volunteer’s interests, skills, expectations and availability with the interests, needs, expectations and lifestyle of a child and family. This provides the best opportunity for a long-lasting friendship to develop.

Once the assessment process is complete, successful volunteers will be appropriately trained and oriented and introduced to their potential match for a three-month “getting to know you” trial period.

Extended Families is required to assess all potential volunteers before they can be introduced to families. The assessment includes a Police Check and Working with Children check (paid for by Extended Families), medical and reference checks, a one-day training and information session and some home interviews.

All information collected is purely for the purpose of assessing suitability and matching potential volunteers with children and is subject to Extended Families’ Privacy Policy
