Our Mission / Objective

The Heart Research Institute is an internationally recognised medical research institute that performs ground breaking cardiovascular research.

Cardiovascular disease is Australia’s – and the world’s – number one killer.

The Heart Research Institute’s mission is to prevent death and suffering from cardiovascular disease through an understanding of the biological processes that cause atherosclerosis and thrombosis, the major underlying causes of most heart attacks and strokes.

The major short-term focus of our research is to understand the development and progression of atherothrombotic conditions in which the arteries are narrowed and restricted due to a build-up of fatty deposits.

This is being achieved via scientific and clinical research work conducted by the scientific groups that make up the HRI, from basic biomedical discovery work, drug discovery and development, and devices and device improvement, to clinical trials and clinical initiatives.

There are four long-term objectives for our research:

  • To investigate mechanisms contributing to the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease.
  • To develop new ways to detect symptoms of cardiovascular disease before it leads to clinical problems.
  • To develop new treatments that can reverse the development of heart disease.
  • To prevent individuals developing cardiovascular disease in the future.

We collaborate with institutes in Australia and globally – with over 60 collaborations across 25 countries – and are partnered with the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, the Sydney Local Health District and Sydney Health Partners in Australia.

Wills and Bequests

Leave a lasting legacy that will live on to help others.

Wording for your Will

“I give to the Heart Research Institute, 7 Eliza St, Newtown NSW 2042, ABN 41 003 209 952, (a percentage), or (a specific sum or piece of property), or (my whole estate) or (the residue of my estate) free from all duties to be used for the general purposes of the Heart Research Institute. A receipt from the treasurer or other authorised person to my executor shall be a complete and sufficient discharge for the payment of such benefit.”

A Gift in your Will to the Heart Research Institute provides important funds to develop research projects that would otherwise not be possible.

Your Will doesn’t need to be complicated – it just needs to reflect your wishes. The most important people you should consider are your loved ones. Once you have provided for them, consider nominating the Heart Research Institute as an additional benefactor.

Gifts in Wills, both large and small, play a vital role in funding crucial research at the Heart Research Institute. They provide a lasting contribution in advancing our understanding of cardiovascular disease, helping prevent, detect and treat cardiovascular disease for generations to come.

You can leave a Gift in your Will in a variety of ways. Discuss these options with your family and your solicitor to work out what works best for you.

  • A Residual Gift: With this type of bequest, the Heart Research Institute receives the balance of the estate after those specifically named in the Will have been provided for.
  • A Percentage Gift: This can be any percentage of your total estate up to 100 percent. This type of bequest enables you to share your estate among several people or organisations without specifying the property or amounts.
  • A Pecuniary Gift: This is a gift of a fixed sum of money made to the Heart Research Institute.
  • A Specific Gift: This type of bequest enables you to leave a specific cash amount or other asset to the Heart Research Institute.
