Our Mission / Objective

Reef Check Australia empowers people to champion healthy Australian reefs through citizen science, inspiring educational experiences, and tangible local conservation action.

Our objectives:

INSPIRING Reef-minded people: We connect people with reef science by providing an unbiased source of accessible, meaningful and accurate information about reef health.

ENGAGING volunteers in reef health monitoring: We foster best-practice reef citizen science programs by providing our volunteers with the training, resources and networks to collect and share robust reef health data for science and management.

EMPOWERING local conservation action for the Reef: We create opportunities for people and communities to identify how they can help tackle reef health issues with local on-ground action through knowledge, tools, resources and support.

Projects in Progress

Reef Ambassadors: Reef Ambassadors are trained volunteers who deliver inspiring and engaging reef education experiences at community events. We will also seek to expand the initiative through ongoing capacity building with talk series, social events and tailored workshops for volunteers to continue building skills, as well as grassroots conservation actions.

Reef citizen science: We currently train and coordinate volunteers to collect robust and globally-standardised reef health data at more than 70 sites along the Queensland coast. We are currently seeking to grow regional hubs to strengthen regional relevance, boost partnership opportunities and enhance our positive impact.
