Our Mission / Objective

Sunshine Butterflies is a disability support service and charity located on the Sunshine Coast. Sunshine Butterflies strives to improve the lives of those living with disability and their families.

Sunshine Butterflies was founded in 2010 by Leanne and Damien Walsh whose son Curtis was born 13 weeks premature with Cerebral Palsy in 1995.

Through Leanne’s experience, passion and dedication, the Sunshine Butterflies vision and mission to provide a better future for people with disabilities began.

Sunshine Butterflies is more than a disability support service, our vision is to empower individuals living with disability and their families and provide them with the support they need to live a happy and fulfilled life.

Our Services

Sunshine Butterflies provides a unique range of educational and recreational disability support services, programs, and activities.

Our uniquely flexible and respectful culture that supports our individuals and their families living with disability is what sets us apart.

Sunshine Butterflies pride ourselves on being able to improve all areas in the lives of people with disability and their families by promoting health and well-being, independence and inclusion in all that we do.

Sunshine Butterflies ‘Our Backyard’ is a 5-acre community facility set in the Noosa Countryside and provides the space to deliver a range of programs, support services and activities for people of all ages and abilities.

Since purchasing the land in 2014, Sunshine Butterflies has transformed the property to accommodate a variety of services. including social and skills-based programs, animal enrichment sessions, therapeutic services, recreational programs, and community events.

‘Our Backyard’ has plenty of facilities for everyone to enjoy, including a Learning Kitchen and Garden, a large Activity Shed, an Adventure Playground, Therapy Rooms, Farm stables, and an Accessible Pool.

‘Our Backyard’ is a place of learning, purpose, and belonging.

Our Beneficiaries

Sunshine Butterflies pride themselves on being able to improve all areas in the lives of people living with disability and their families, by promoting health and well-being, independence and inclusion through their programs.

Our members are children, youth, young adults, and adults who have a diagnosed intellectual, physical, and/or sensory disability, and their families and carers.

Members come predominantly from the Noosa, Sunshine Coast, and Gympie regions, however, we support individuals all over Australia with personal fundraising support, information, and assistance.

Projects in Progress

As we have successfully achieved many of our goals and continue to support people living with a disability, we look forward to the future of Sunshine Butterflies.

Sunshine Butterflies is ready to take the next step in our development and is working on ventures which will provide greater community connection as well as employment and training opportunities and affordable, independent living options for people living with a disability.

Plans for the future include:

  • Development of an on-site Café at Our Backyard which will involve Employment and Training opportunities for people living with a disability
  • Expansion of the 5-acre property ‘Our Backyard’ over to the 10 acres next door to create affordable, supported independent living accommodation for people living with a disability.
  • Creation of community-based Educational Workshops and activities on-site at Our Backyard
  • Agritourism opportunities will provide educational experiences at our unique 15-acre facility in the Noosa Countryside.

Our Backyard

Moving forward, we intend to expand our services and activities to include the broader community at our new home, ‘Our Backyard’. We look forward to providing unique workshops, farm experiences, and community-based programs and activities for the general population to enjoy while encouraging an inclusive and supportive environment for people living with a disability.

We look forward to the future of Sunshine Butterflies and invite you to come along on the journey with us!
