Our Mission / Objective

Sunshine Butterflies is a not- for-profit organisation and registered charity that strives to improve all areas in the lives of people with disabilities. Sunshine Butterflies provides families with parent support, information and individual assistance, swim, social and recreational opportunities, early intervention programs, post school recreational programs, respite and personal fundraising plans.

Sunshine Butterflies was founded by Leanne Walsh, whose son Curtis has cerebral palsy. The challenges that Leanne, husband Damien and Curtis face day to day as a family, ultimately has given Leanne the Sunshine Butterflies vision – to empower families and individuals living with disability and to provide them with the support they need to achieve a happy and fulfilled life. Launching the charity in 2005, Leanne made it her mission to reduce the stigma of disability within the community, and now leads a small and passionate team to help make this dream a reality.

Sunshine Butterflies is permanently based at their Cooroibah property, ‘Our Backyard’, which is bursting with endless possibilities. The 5 acre Hobby Farm is the new base for all Sunshine Butterflies social and recreational programs and activities (music, drama, art, cooking, woodwork, singing and theatre, puppeteering, horticulture, permaculture, gardening, environmental activities, aquaculture and animal care).

‘Our Backyard’ will have a purpose built horticulture training facility, barn yard, cooking, art and music education areas, a function area, animal shelter, a nursery, first aid training room, respite facility and a conference room available for the whole community to enjoy.

‘Our Backyard’ will provide significant benefit to the community as the space is available for a variety of uses for schools, community events, training organisations, trainees and apprentices. Social Butterflies

Social Butterflies is a model developed by Sunshine Butterflies CEO and Founder, Leanne Walsh to provide work skills training and purpose for individuals living with a disability who may feel excluded from the current workforce. The Sunshine Butterflies social enterprise program has been developed with the specific purpose to develop members’ social skills and create a sense of inclusions within their community. The social enterprise program fulfils the diverse needs and interests that already exist within the local community whilst generating a profit for a good cause.

Social enterprises operate by generating financial return on socially responsible products/services while simultaneously advancing a social mission. The Social Butterflies mission is to provide an inclusive initiative that allows people of all abilities to be involved in a supportive and educational workforce. Sunshine Butterflies has run a 1 year pilot of this intuitive and has recognised great success and potential for all involved.

Animal Therapy

Come and play with Sunshine Butterflies furry and feathery friends at the farm!

Sunshine Butterflies is proud of our Animal Therapy program. Animal therapy has been proven to increase mental alertness, enhance social skills and promote positivity levels in people with disabilities.

Our current farmyard family includes countless chickens, Ron the Rooster, Scarlett and Billy the dexter cows, Gaston and Major Lazer the goats, Victor and Cecil the sheep, and farm pups Fraser, Jack and Frankie. Jimmy the donkey also lives here and has many birds who like to join him on the farm fun.

Members will have the opportunity to care and interact with the farm animals in a safe and educational environment. Through this program, individuals living with a disability  will learn to correctly interpret human and animal body language, understand animals cognition and emotions, build confidence, assist with animal enrichment programs, and most importantly benefit from the emotional and psychological benefits of the cohesive bond between human and animal…
