Our Beneficiaries

The goal of Westmead Medical Research Foundation is to build a healthier community locally, national, and globally. Your support enables us to advance outstanding medical research that is translated into practical treatments and potential cures for our community. These treatments and cures may benefit someone you know or love living in western Sydney, across Australia, or may benefit others across the globe. Your support enhances the amazing level of care provided by doctors, nurses and allied health workers at Westmead Hospital. Together, medical researchers, working alongside doctors and nurses, uncover breakthroughs with real outcomes.

Ultimately, it is the people that turn to the doctors, nurses, specialists and medical researchers for help that benefit from your actions to support Westmead Medical Research Foundation.

Projects in Progress

Hawks Nest Project

The Hawks Nest Project gives families who are experiencing terrible hardship and pain, through sickness, the opportunity to take a break from their medical routine and treatments and spend time away as a family in the beautiful surrounds of Hawks Nest on the New South Wales mid-north coast. This project is supported by local landlords and real estate agencies, plus community support from businesses and individual supporters across western Sydney.

Building campaign for a new medical research institute facility

We dream of a world without cancer, heart disease, diabetes, mental illnesses and many other medical conditions. Yet, there needs to be practical solutions. That’s why medical research is important, to find improved methods of treatment and hopefully a cure. Medical research requires specialised facilities and equipment and such is the growth and success of medical research on the Westmead campus that constiruction has commenced for a new medical research that will be opened in 2014. Your support towards this project will help provide answers for future generations. This is one of the greatest contributions you can make.

Equipment for Westmead Hospital

Whether it be a wheelchair, a microsope, or a cutting-edge surgical device, there is only so much that the government can provide to our hospitals. That is why we turn to the community for support. Your donation helps to fund new purchases of equipment or replace ageing equipment. For example, in 2012, through the generousity of our supporters, we funded four neo-natal transport beds. These temperature controlled essential cribs are used to transport premature and critically ill babies from maternity ward into the neo-natal unit, or to the adjacent children’s hospital. These beds ensure that babies have every chance of a good start to life.

Suporting doctors, medical researchers, and nurses through education

Continued education and training of doctors, medical researchers and nurses is critical to ensuring that people who access health services at Westmead get the best level of care provided by experienced and capable practitioners. Through the generousity of our supporters, we provide a range of competitive scholarships, grants, and fellowships to leaders in their field to further their knowledge and understanding of our complex human body.

How to help us

Wills and Bequests

One of the greatest contributions you can make is to help provide answers for future generations.

Scientists have mapped out the human genome: decoding a master blueprint of our bodies that has untold implications for future advances in medical care. As a result, we are living longer and healthier lives.

Many of us are surviving what were once ‘terminal’ illnesses, or avoiding diseases altogether thanks to the fruits of preventative medicine.

Across the globe, men, women and children are recovering from debilitating accidents and injuries thanks to more effective diagnostic measures in those first crucial hours post trauma. Sight, hearing, and mobility are being restored through revolutionary procedures.

Babies in the womb are being cured of defects through microscopic foetal surgery that increases their chances of survival and quality of life.

Yet there is much more to be done.  Imagine there is no cancer, no diabetes, no heart disease, no mental illness…

Westmead Medical Research Foundation relies on the support and goodwill of the community to help fund medical research and find improved methods of treatment and care for patients.

A gift in your Will enables medical researchers to continually push the boundaries of medical innovation, while also broadening the scope and reach of the treatments doctors and nurses can provide to the 1 million patients that seek care at Westmead Hospital every year.

Your gift, no matter how large or small, can literally save thousands of lives. We sincerely thank all our supporters who make a gift or leave a bequest to Westmead Medical Research Foundation.

Ultimately, it is the people that turn to the doctors, nurses, specialists and medical researchers for help that will benefit from your actions today.

By including a simple clause in your Will that makes a gift to Westmead Medical Research Foundation, you may become a member of the ‘Betty Schofield Society’.  The society is in honour Miss Betty Schofield OAM, who was a remarkable and visionary woman who served the western Sydney community for over 40 years.
