Our Mission / Objective

Youngcare is a not-for-profit organisation spearheading powerful and positive change to create a future where every young person has the freedom, dignity and choice to live the lives we all deserve. We are boldly tackling a national issue, empowering industry, government and community to work together to bring much-needed change to the disability housing sector. Too many young Australians with high care needs are being left behind. These young people deserve the freedom to choose where and how they live, and it’s up to all of us to make sure that happens.

Our Services

Housing Solutions: Youngcare is committed to driving change and developing practical alternatives to aged care. Through our building program we are creating appropriate homes – vibrant, modern living spaces where young people can live young and independent lives, with appropriate and dignified care.

Grants: Youngcare runs At Home Care Grants (AHCG) and Home Soon Grants (HSG)to provide funding for equipment, home modifications and emergency respite care to enhance the quality of life for young people with high care needs and their carers.

Youngcare Connect: Youngcare Connect is a free national information and support line which helps families navigate the maze of the healthcare system. Established in 2010, the support line connects young people with high care needs, their families and carers to the services and the support they so desperately need.

Research: Youngcare is working in partnership with Griffith University and Recover Injury Research Centre on the world’s first research regarding young people with high care needs. We are working to find out, where young people with high care needs want to live, the kind of home they would like to live in, and the type of care they want to receive. The partnership brings together experts in the health, disability and housing sectors to understand young people’s needs and develop better ways to fulfil them.

Policy Work: Youngcare works with governments at all levels to press for policy change and help address the gaps in the system. We also liaise with a wide range of other decision makers to raise awareness of the problems facing young people with high care needs.

Projects in Progress

Youngcare currently has four apartment complexes in Queensland. Sinnamon Park which opened in 2007, followed by Coomera in 2012, the Wooloowin Share House in 2015 and most recently the Albany Creek Apartments in 2017. Since 2007 Youngcare has assisted in providing appropriate accommodation for 48 young people with high care needs. In partnership with Griffith University, we are also pioneering new models of care and housing that set the standard for others to follow. From one and two-bedroom apartments to share houses, Youngcare’s architect-designed homes incorporate best practice and can be easily replicated. We are proving that it is possible to offer young people with high care needs a choice of appropriate accommodation in a cost-effective manner.

Volunteer with us

Youngcare volunteers are one of most important and valued resources – without them we could not continue our work to help so many young people in desperate need.  Volunteering for Youngcare is a great way to have fun, meet new people and broaden your skills; all while helping young people with high care needs live life with choice, dignity and independence. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved; join our volunteer family, lend a hand at Youngcare HQ in Brisbane or help out at one of our events. We would love to welcome you into our Youngcare family.
