It’s 2022 Federal Budget time! 

Join Pro Bono News editor Wendy Williams and prominent social sector leaders Cheryl Axleby, Mat Tinkler and Jacqueline Phillips for a deep dive into what this year’s federal budget means for the for-purpose economy. Following the panel we’ll speak to not-for-profit communications expert Jo Scard to hear how organisations can best engage with government around the budget and ensure they get a seat at the table in the lead up to the next election.

Meet the panel: 

Cheryl Axleby, Co-Chair, Change the Record

Cheryl is a proud Narungga Woman who is passionate about improving the quality of life for her people. Cheryl has spent the last 40 years working within the Aboriginal community, Federal Govt and South Australian Government to improve the lives of First Nations peoples. She has experience working within the Aboriginal community sector, law and justice, women’s issues, family violence, youth justice, child and family services and is currently working in the Aboriginal Community Housing sector. Cheryl is committed to influencing positive change and outcomes for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander peoples.

 

Mat Tinkler, Deputy CEO, Save the Children Australia

Mat has dual responsibility for delivering Save the Children’s International Programs and ensuring Save the Children is a strong voice for children within government policy, the media and the Australian community.

Previously, Mat worked as Chief of Staff to a senior Cabinet Minister with the Federal Government, overseeing a diverse range of portfolios covering taxation law, superannuation and financial services regulation, consumer credit, charity and not-for-profit regulation, insurance reforms, workplace relations and disability reform. Prior to this role he was Acting Executive Director for the Public Law Clearing House, an organisation that provides legal services to the most disadvantaged Australians. Mat began his career as a corporate lawyer at Minter Ellison.

 

Jacqueline Phillips, Co-deputy CEO and director of policy and advocacy, Australian Council of Social Service

Jacqueline joined ACOSS as the Director of Policy and Advocacy in August 2013. From 2010-13, she was the National Director of Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation (ANTaR), a national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander rights and reconciliation advocacy organisation.

She has a long history of involvement with the COSSes, having previously worked as a Policy Officer at ACOSS and the ACT Council of Social Service (ACTCOSS). She has policy expertise across a range of areas including social security, housing and homelessness, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander policy issues, community development, human rights and justice.
