Creating the conditions for success (and avoidingcommon pitfalls).

Join the Australian Centre for Social Innovation (TACSI) and Centre for Mental Health Learning (CMHL) to learn about some of the most common ways that co-design activities fail to reach their potential and practical strategies to overcome them by creating enabling conditions.

Drawing on TACSI’s experience working with not-for-profit organisations, funders and commissioners, this masterclass will explore the critical mindsets for co-design, options for building co-design teams, how to set-up a healthy bureaucracy for innovation and include perspectives on how broader systems could evolve to create an enabling environment for co-design.

CMHL are taking up the role to support the mental health sector in Victoria to create the conditions for authentic co-design in alignment with the Royal Commission recommendations. Learn what they see as the challenges and opportunities.

Deb Carlon will provide her perspective as lived-experience facilitator of co-design, along with her participation in co-design from a consumer lived experience perspective. CHML have engaged Deb as the Victorian lived experience co-design lead to work towards creating the conditions for authentic co-design, in an environment that has been authorised by the recommendations from the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health Services.

  • a pattern pack of co-production strategies

Who is this masterclass for?

Organisations looking to create the enabling conditions for co-design in their organisation or sector.

Meet your presenters:

Chris Vanstone, chief innovation officer

Chris has spent 20 years working in communities in the UK and Australia designing co-produced services, including Family by Family. He’s determined to make innovation accessible, and supports organisations to build the capabilities for “co” and social research and development.

Carla Clarence, mental health lead
Carla is a practitioner that lives “co” – putting decision-making power in the hands of people with lived-experience in everything she does; in strategy, in design and in the boardroom. Carla focuses her work on mental health and is experienced in leading co-design processes that break down the entrenched power dynamics between community members and professionals.

Melanie Rayment, director of social innovation consulting
Melanie is passionate about creating the conditions for not-for-profit organisations to innovate. She recently led TACSI’s social innovation learning network which uncovered many of the challenges, and perhaps some of the solutions, to making co-production business as usual in the social sector.

Deb Carlon, Victorian lived experience co-design lead, Centre for Mental Health Learning (CMHL)

Deb has held consumer leadership and executive management roles for a number of years. She is passionate about true system reform and addressing power by having those most impacted by the changes setting the agenda. Her vision is a mental health system that offers genuine alternatives and healing for psych survivors/consumers.
