About the role

Are you a driven and motivated advancement professional, looking to make your mark at a time of significant growth and change?  Macquarie University prides itself on its innovation and brave new thinking and is seeking a similarly motivated individual to join their Development team.

Macquarie is the university of pioneering minds. Globally recognised as one of Australia’s leading research universities, Macquarie is a place where extraordinary new possibilities come to light. We’ve helped people to hear, introduced wireless internet technology to the world and broken through traditional boundaries by appointing the Australia’s first female vice-chancellor.

At Macquarie you’ll join a vibrant community of diverse perspectives, all working towards a brighter future for our communities and our planet. Surrounded by beautiful parkland campus, our students and staff are free to explore and discover, supported by facilities including a high-tech library, private teaching hospital, gym and pools, childcare facilities, a campus train station and the newly expanded Macquarie Centre shopping complex next door.

Join us and start seeing the world in a different light.

With significant investment in Advancement, the Philanthropy team has grown from five to 24 in three years and as a direct result, philanthropic income has risen rapidly from $2m in 2013 to $10m in 2015.  Much of this growth has been driven through an initial focus on major gifts, with particular success with supporters in Australia, Hong Kong and mainland China.  The Alumni team are moving from a strong platform of a high volume engagement to placing an increasing focus on the delivery and measurement of the quality, depth and impact of engagement.

The priority is now to achieve a similarly significant and rapid expansion in individual giving.  While our 170,000 alumni will remain a key component, with increasingly sophisticated stewardship programs, appeals, phone campaigns, and enhanced legacy giving programs, the aim is to reach out to many new audiences, expanding awareness, engagement, and opportunities to give and to fundraise on our behalf.

The Director of Individual Giving will be responsible for developing a strategy to build substantial and sustainable support from our 40,000 current students, 3,500 staff, former staff, patients, local residents, and employees of the dozens of businesses based directly within our campus or adjacent to us in the Macquarie Park Innovation District.  Community fundraising will play a key role in this strategy.

The combination of our location within Macquarie Park, set to be the biggest commercial district outside of Sydney CBD, our active engagement with companies based nearby, and our ownership of a Hospital presents us with a unique set of opportunities for growing individual giving beyond the immense potential that lies with our substantial and loyal alumni network.

A creative and strategic thinker, with an outstanding track record of growing individual giving programs in the not-for-profit or education sectors, is needed to develop the strategy and lead a growing team to realise this incredible potential.
