The Uniting Church in Australia (UCA) is Australia’s third largest church, 1 million members strong and a leading presence in the not for profit sector.
The UCA’s expansive scope of operations includes its Congregations, Presbyteries, community service Agencies, Independent housing organisation Age Well, an ethical Investment Fund, numerous Schools and Colleges, Camp sites, Pastoral Centres, Aboriginal Cultural Hubs, Centre of Theological Ministries and the Synod Office at 130 Little Collins Street.
The Legal Services Unit consists of three portfolio teams: Property, Trusts and Ethnical Standards. A General Counsel is needed to lead the experienced in-house team providing general legal advice and support including but not limited to, procurement and related probity issues, intellectual property, corporations’ law, insurance and indemnities, insolvency issues and bequests.
The role
The Uniting Church in Australia, Synod of Victoria and Tasmania, is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified and accomplished General Counsels/ Director’s of Legal Services.

Legal Services representation is expectantly required by you across Synod Committees, Boards and Property Trust activities.
Your primary accountabilities as the Director Legal Services is to:
•Engage, mentor and inspire team of professionals in the provision of a comprehensive suite of legal services to meet the legal requirements of The Uniting Church in Australia (UCA), Synod of Victoria and Tasmania.
•Provide strategic legal advice to the Executive Director Administration and Finance and the General Secretary.
•Provide oversight of all legal services, provided by in-house lawyers or procured from external legal firms, always safe guarding the mission based objectives of the UCA.
•Actively limit the exposure of UCA to the risk of litigation, protect the commercial interests of UCA and ensure that legal advice, litigation management and other legal services meet the highest standards.
•Provide General Counsel’s advice on all aspects of legislation, regulations, orders and other statutory instruments relevant to The Uniting Church in Australia.
•Develop and maintain knowledge management and reporting system
