The Clean Air and Urban Landscapes Hub (CAUL) is one of six research hubs in the Australian Government’s National Environmental Science Program. The CAUL Hub is a consortium of four universities: the University of Melbourne, RMIT University, the University of Western Australia and the University of Wollongong.

The Indigenous Engagement and Participation Strategy is a major focus of the CAUL Hub’s research. It aims to understand how Aboriginal culture and knowledge can help innovate and enhance the sustainable future of cities. Through guidance of an Indigenous Advisory Group, CAUL seeks to use the Strategy to create innovative partnerships with Aboriginal communities to so that urban sustainability research can both benefit from, and contribute to, those communities. The role and responsibilities

The Indigenous Research Associate (Urban Sustainability) will support efforts within CUR and CAUL to address the existing gap between urban sustainability research in Australia and Indigenous perspectives, knowledges and interests. Working with existing research teams, the position w ill support the development of Indigenous-led urban sustainability research capacity through innovative community-based partnerships. This will involve undertaking research and engagement activities to: address knowledge gaps in urban sustainability from an Indigenous perspective; and assist the development and facilitation of partnerships with Indigenous communities in Australian cities toward an Indigenous-led urban sustainability research agenda.

Skills and Experience required

The successful applicant will have skills and experience in managing research and engagement activities within timelines and budgets; demonstrated experience working in partnership with Indigenous communities; ensuring compliance with quality and reporting requirements; and communicating research results in appropriate outlets in collaboration with others. You must have a strong commitment to the broad objective of placing Indigenous interests, rights, perspectives and knowledges at the heart of urban sustainability research and an awareness of the sensitivities of research that involve or have the potential to impact on Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island peoples.
