Position Title: Philanthropy Manager
Purpose of Position: To generate philanthropic support for Sydney Film Festival from individuals, fundraising events, trusts and foundations
Contract Duration: Full time
Reporting to: Development Manager
The Sydney Film Festival is one of the longest running events of its kind in the world. Each year the festival brings the best new local and international films to audiences in Sydney. As well premiere features from over forty countries, SFF screens short films, Australian films, documentaries and archive titles. The festival hosts a number of awards to recognise excellence in filmmaking, including the Official Competition, Dendy Awards for Australian Short Films, (which are Academy Award eligible) and Documentary Prize.
Sydney Film Festival, which turns 64 in 2017, occurs in 12 days in June in eight locations across the Sydney CBD.
SFF also runs the Travelling Film Festival, taking mini-festivals to 18 venues across regional NSW, Queensland and the Northern Territory.
About the Role
Sydney Film Festival is run by a small, passionate team. Since the launch of Philanthropy in July 2014, SFF has an increasing cohort of patrons and a board who are committed to supporting the Festival and its future endeavors. This role was created to establish philanthropy within SFF and build a solid foundation towards the future. It is a career development opportunity; with the candidate being mentored by an external industry leader.
Reporting / Working Relationships
The position is a member of the Development Team and reports to the Development Manager. The position of Philanthropy Manager works closely with the Development Manager to provide strategic leadership, driving innovation with a particular focus on unrestricted individual giving. The Development Manager is responsible for leading all corporate fundraising procurement and managing a small seasonal team in the partnership servicing. The Philanthropy Manager is responsible for executing the Philanthropy Strategy. Each member of the Development team is responsible to all other members and group performance is measured and valued alongside individual achievement.
Beyond the Development team, this position works closely with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The role has a dotted line to the CEO, who is closely involved with all philanthropic activities.
All senior management have input into activities requiring philanthropic support and contribute to rolling these activities out.
Overview of the Position
The Philanthropy Manager is responsible for the delivery of all Sydney Film Festival (SFF) philanthropic activities and endeavors.
Key Accountabilities and Duties
Set annual campaign strategy for year round donations and appeal campaigns
Achieve agreed targets across general donations and appeal campaigns
Oversee successful integration of donation methods and campaigns (ex. annual subscription donations) with marketing materials
Oversee the design and print processes of any creative collateral associated
Manage and disseminate all reporting on income
Individual Giving Programs
Review patron program strategies and revise annually as required
Achieve financial targets through donations from individuals
Cultivation – building philanthropic support
Research, identify and develop new sources of philanthropic income for SFF
Analysis of giving trends, with potential for further stakeholder engagement; manage implementation of that analysis
Devise creative ways of attracting new donors to the organisation
With the CEO and senior management team, develop cultivation plans for major gifts
Solicitation and Stewardship – engaging supporters and building strong relationships
Manage cultivation plans for major gift prospects and engage the appropriate senior management and directors (board) in gift solicitation
Devise and implement a creative stewardship program to further engage SFF supporters
Oversee the delivery of all stewardship program activities, donor acknowledgement and reporting
First point of contact for all donors and supporters
Manage all communications with donors, including but not limited to letters, emails and phone communication
Foundation, Trusts and Grants
Develop and manage a calendar of grant opportunities, writing submissions and acquittals as required
Develop and implement the fundraising strategy, achieving the agreed target
Coordinate all plans with senior management to ensure effective coordination of all stakeholder engagement activity
Oversee the successful running of all other philanthropic events including but not limited to patrons and donor engagement
Oversee the design and print processes of any creative collateral associated with events
Organisation – ensuring effective management of philanthropic activities
Ensure the accurate and timely processing of tax receipts and record keeping
Monitor and report on financial targets – income and expenditure
Coordinate and manage all aspects of philanthropic online giving capabilities, working closely with the relevant CRM and digital marketing staff
Support the Development Team on other tasks when instructed, such as Sponsorship acquisition and partner stewardship
Coordinate and manage other festival or year round events as instructed, which are not within the philanthropic portfolio
Qualifications & Critical Competencies
– A minimum of 3 years’ experience in fundraising / relationship management in the arts and/or not for profit sector
– Ability to drive strategic plans from ideas to reality
– Excellent relationship-building skills
– Ability to engage board and senior management in philanthropy strategies
– Demonstrated ability with a relevant CRM system
– Excellent attention to detail
– Excellent oral and written communication skills
– Systematic problem solver and researcher – proficiency in collating and analyzing information
– Process oriented, efficient and well organized, demonstrating an ability to prioritise
– Team player – friendly, can-do approach to work and life
– Well-presented, demonstrating confidence and a passion for the arts
– Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
– Ability to undertake flexible work hours across the festival period and year round events
