The role is suited to someone who is passionate about working in a community field. You must be adaptable, capable of dealing with change, plus have a comprehensive understanding of health and social issues for people who use drugs (PWUD). cohealth aims to improve the health and wellbeing of people who use drugs in the inner north and western suburbs of Melbourne. Funded by the Department of Health and Human Services, the service provides a range of programs. This position of Needle & Syringe Program (NSP) Worker sits within the harm reduction and client engagement team at cohealth.

NSP workers provide services to clients accessing the NSP and act as a conduit to other areas of the service. This is a vital role in engaging clients and ensuring that services are provided in a respectful and non-judgemental manner and in a way that protects client confidentiality. You will work within a harm reduction framework to provide education, information and referral to PWUD to reduce the risks of drug use and improve their overall health and wellbeing.

The NSP Worker is responsible for ensuring the provision of high quality services to people who inject/use drugs by:

  • Maximising opportunities to engage with clients, providing education on safer drug use, HIV prevention and treatment, Hepatitis prevention and treatment, vein care and related health issues and other implications of street drug use
  • Co-managing the drop in spaces
  • Syringe management, education, evening outreach activities, packing and sorting safe injecting equipment
  • Outreach, secure dispensing units, ordering stock, collecting water/consumables money and participation in health promotion campaigns
  • Maintaining information systems on relevant resources and implementing relevant administrative procedures and systems.

To be considered for this position you will have;

  • A tertiary qualification(s) in a relevant discipline (e.g., AOD, community development, social work etc) and/or equivalent professional knowledge, skills and experience
  • Sound knowledge of the health and social issues for people who use drugs such as: blood borne virus prevention, pharmacotherapy treatment, stigma and discrimination
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution and negotiation and the ability to communicate effectively with people from diverse social and cultural backgrounds
  • The ability to engage with service users in a warm, non-judgemental manner, demonstrate a strong customer service focussed approach and where appropriate, engage the client in harm reduction brief interventions, education and/or information and referral
  • Computer skills including the use of MS-Office based systems and familiarity with computerised databases
  • A current Victorian driver licence.
