The Brotherhood of St Laurence employs over 600 employees and is supported by 1200 volunteers. We are developing social and community enterprises to address inequality by forming partnerships between government, business, community and welfare organisations.

As well as providing services and programs for families and elderly on low incomes, refugees, young people and the unemployed, we research the causes and effects of poverty and advocate national and local policy solutions for people who are disadvantaged.

The BSL is currently focusing its work on strategies to alleviate and prevent poverty for those people most at risk at the four transition stages considered critical to their future wellbeing: the early years, the years from school to work, periods in and out of work and retirement and ageing.

About the role

Summary of program and its objectives:
The Research and Policy Centre is one of eight divisions at the Brotherhood of St Laurence and has responsibility for seeding new approaches to social policy, programs and practice that help shape a better future for individuals, families and communities experiencing poverty, inequality and social exclusion.
Our research and policy practice is guided by our commitment to the development of knowledge and evidence that is:
• ethical
• robust
• independent but not neutral; we stand with and for people and places experiencing poverty, inequality and social exclusion
• accessible to diverse audiences.

Main responsibilities of the role:
The purpose of the Research Officer is to contribute research in relation to youth unemployment, local labour markets, and the development of innovative employment service models for young people. This study forms part of a broader research program on work and economic security.

To meet the selection criteria, candidates will require:
Qualifications

• a relevant tertiary qualification with extensive relevant experience or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training
Knowledge
• developing knowledge of the relevant field
• understanding of the social research and policy environment including contemporary issues
• knowledge of relevant ethical research practices and codes
Skills
• demonstrated research skills
• demonstrated capacity to write for academic publication
• demonstrated time management and organisational skills including the ability to plan workload prioritise and meet deadlines
• demonstrated proficiency with research related software E.g. Endnote, Microsoft Office Software (Word, Excel, Access etc)
• capacity to develop publication record
• capacity to develop presentation skills
• capacity to develop project management skills

This is a part time, maximum term position of 4 months working 22.8 hours per week.

Salary will be in the range of $63,874 to $66,965 per annum (pro rata), based on skills and experience plus superannuation. Attractive salary packaging provisions are available to increase take home pay.
