About the organisation

Organisation Name : Carers NSW
Carers NSW is the peak non-government organisation for carers in NSW and a member of the National Network of Carers Associations. Our focus is on improving the lives of carers. Carers NSW works with all carers regardless of their age, location, life-stage or circumstances. This includes those caring for individuals with support needs relating to ageing, disability, health and mental illness. Carers NSW is a not-for-profit registered charity. In June 2015 Carers NSW status changed to company limited by guarantee. We are governed by a Board of Directors in accordance with the Corporations Act 2001 and the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission Act 2012. Carers NSW receives funding from a range of sources including the NSW Department of Family and Community Services and the Australian Government Department of Social Services. Carers NSW is based in Sydney, has a number of regional offices, and provides supports to carers across NSW. Carers NSW acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land, and pays respect to Elders past, present and future.

About the role

Carers NSW is the peak organisation for carers in NSW, a member of the National Network of Carer Associations and focuses on supporting and advocating for carers of all ages and circumstances.

The Board governs activities of Carers NSW and draws on the expertise and insights of Directors to achieve our strategic priorities. Board meetings are held at Carers NSW’s head office in North Sydney, generally on a bi-monthly basis.

We endeavour to have a Board of Directors that comprises a mix of appropriate skills and experience and reflects the diversity of the community that we serve. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, LGBTIQ people and people with a lived experience of a disability or a carer role are strongly encouraged to apply.

In addition, applicants should have a mix of the following experience and expertise:

  •  Demonstrated experience in representing diverse communities, such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander or Culturally and Linguistically Diverse communities, in a variety of contexts
  • Experience in public sector/health/carer industry – ideally with some social sciences research, policy or academic background
  • Understanding of and commitment to carers, with a lived experience of caring being advantageous
  • Capacity to commit sufficient time to actively participate in the activities of the Board
