About the organisation

Organisation Name : Eastern Community Legal Centre
Eastern Community Legal Centre responds to the legal and related needs of the communities across Melbourne's east, with a focus on those most vulnerable. Professional and innovative services are delivered from three offices and numerous outreach locations. Since 2015, ECLC has been engaged in a health justice partnership with key stakeholders in the Eastern region that provides an early intervention response and wrap-around service to women experiencing family violence, particularly at an early stage, funded by the Legal Services Board. Following success implementation of phase one of the Program, renewed funding will enable the enhancement of MABELS.

About the role

As one of two lawyers within the MABELS Team, the Community Lawyer will work in collaboration with project personnel and family violence advocates as part of a specialist team within the broader legal practice. The Community Lawyer will ideally have considerable experience in family violence, child protection and generalist law and the ability to deliver holistic and high quality prevention and intervention legal services to vulnerable women and their children.

Skills Required
You will be eligible to hold an unrestricted Victorian Practising Certificate and have demonstrated post-admission experience in a broad range of legal matters. You will be a compassionate person who respects people, their circumstances and decisions and take a holistic approach to your work. You are comfortable operating both autonomously and within a cohesive team, and have the ability to prioritise and manage multiple, competing demands. Specifically, you will have:

• awareness of the relationship between casework, community development and community legal education
• Demonstrated understanding of the dynamics of family violence as it affects women
• Demonstrated ability to work with client groups who may be reluctant to disclose legal issues
• Experience working with or within a multi-disciplinary environment

This position is part-time based at ECLC’s Boronia location (and integrated outreach locations across Melbourne’s East) on a parental leave contract. Attractive remuneration will be negotiated with the successful applicant based on qualifications, skills and experience.
