Through its activities and programs, GA: (i) enables people who have been through a similar experience to support each other (ii) shares, collects and produces information which is often not available in lay form (iii) raises awareness of genetic disorders and the lived experience for families affected and (iv) contributes to government policy development.

Executive Director Position Description – Genetic Alliance Australia

Position Title: Executive Director
Award: NSW Health Professionals (Health Education
Officer Grad Level 5- Salary packaging option)
Employment Status: 5 days a week full-time (some flexibility)
Entity: Genetic Alliance Australia
Reports to: Genetic Alliance Australia Board

This role offers a wonderful opportunity to lead a small but highly respected consumer organization to facilitate support for those affected directly or indirectly by genetic conditions.

Genetic Alliance Australia (GA) is a not-for-profit organisation funded by NSW Government to provide peer support and information to individuals and families affected directly or indirectly by rare genetic conditions – some so rare there is no support group. GA brings together and represents its 410 members comprising individuals, support groups and health professionals. Through its activities and programs, GA:
(i) enables people who have been through a similar experience to support each other
(ii) shares, collects and produces information which is often not available in lay form
(iii) raises awareness of genetic disorders and the lived experience for families affected and
(iv) contributes to government policy development.

Purpose of Position:
• Lead Genetic Alliance Australia including management of a small team of staff and volunteers, resources and oversee delivery of programs
• Plan and create innovative approaches to providing peer support
• Provide peer support and information to individuals and families through a range of approaches (including by phone, face-to-face, online, social media, seminars, workshops and metro and rural outreach programs)
• Deliver presentations to doctors, nurses, allied health, support groups and community groups around patient support
• Promote collaboration through liaison with other support groups and networks about policies and submissions
• Represent the consumer voice when requested around genetic services, research and on government documents and policies
• Provide consumer representation on various committees
• Guide individuals and families to information and resources on rare genetic conditions
• Develop and maintain partnerships and networks including with Genetic Services, support groups and the Garvan Institute of Medical Research
• Prepare tenders, grant and sponsorship submissions
• Develop, manage and review the operations of GA through strategic planning processes, reporting to and working with the GA Board

Selection Criteria
• Demonstrated experience in providing support and information to individuals and families
• Tertiary qualifications in health related field are preferable
• Demonstrated understanding of the impact of genetic conditions and related issues on individuals, the family and carers
• Demonstrated experience in staff management and leadership of a small team
• Experience in presenting and facilitating support group meetings and seminars
• Ability to develop and maintain partnerships and networks
• Highly developed oral and written communication skills
• Demonstrated skills in working with Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
• Strong commitment to equity, enabling person centred practice from consultation with families

The ideal candidate will be a multi-tasking self-starter who has compassion, empathy and strong professional boundaries. This role will stimulate and reward someone who is hands-on, independent and passionate about the importance of support, connecting people and ensuring the consumer voice is heard.
