Music Australia is a not for profit national umbrella body and champion for all music. We work independently and with members and partners to stimulate and promote the value of music, school music education, sector professional development and public engagement. We provide advocacy and information services to strengthen music in Australia, and run projects including Australia’s largest school music program Music: Count Us In; and a contemporary music industry conference. The organisation enjoys high levels of respect and utilisation by the professional music sector, has a growing membership, a well-equipped Sydney office, solid digital platforms, and substantial engagement with over 700,000 Australians accessing services annually.

About the role

Lead the strategic development, growth transition, advocacy, revenue-raising and service delivery of national music council. Part time 0.6 position (3 days per week), contract position, opportunity to drive growth transition and expand to full time role. Based in Music Australia’s Erskineville office Sydney.

Position

Music Australia’s Board seeks to appoint a new CEO, the third in its 25-year history, to lead the organisation in its next phase of development. The CEO will tap significant strategic opportunities for the organisation as it navigates a changed funding landscape and transitions to a new business model with more diversified and self-generated income. These include expanding the reach and revenues of Music: Count Us In – Australia’s largest and most respected school music program; leveraging the successful Roundtable Conference to strengthen strategic professional sector outcomes in contemporary music, tapping into the commercial income and services potential of the organisation’s substantial national reach. The role offers the opportunity to drive organisational growth and expand to a full-time position.

The Person          

The successful candidate will have:

  • The capacity to effectively represent, promote and advocate for the organisation and its vision nationally, and on behalf of the broader sector
  • A solid grasp of and commitment to school music education, extensive experience in the professional music sector, and well developed national industry knowledge and networks
  • The ability to lead a growing business development function utilising proven entrepreneurial, fundraising and income generating capabilities.
  • Excellent strategic, operational and financial management skills and track record

Reporting to a national Board of Directors, The CEO will be based in Music Australia’s Erskineville office, Sydney, and lead a small staff team, currently three full time equivalent positions.

Key Responsibilities

The CEO provides leadership and overall management of Music Australia, and:

  • Works closely with the board to articulate and implement a clear vision and ambitious, achievable strategies and programs
  • Leads effective advocacy across government, business and community – for the organisation itself to grow its scale and viability, and on behalf of the sector including school music education
  • Leads business and financial development to grow diverse income streams, from governments and philanthropy, sponsorship, donations and, and self-generated revenues
  • Develops beneficial and reciprocal partnerships with a wide variety of stakeholders including music and education organisations and sponsors
  • Oversees timely and cost-effective delivery of all operational programs and services, developing and monitoring budgets, and ensuring sound financial practices and reporting
  • Delivers effective reporting, governance and risk management activities to the Board, funders, stakeholders, statutory agencies and others as required
  • Provides high quality human resource management, and builds collaborative staff and stakeholder teams and relationships and solid sector engagement

Selection Criteria

  • High level strategic and organisational leadership skills with a proven capacity to implement successful strategies delivering benefit to diverse stakeholders
  • Proven abilities in leading and managing the program delivery, operations, finance and governance of a similar organisation
  • A successful track record in identifying and securing philanthropic support, government grant funding, and sponsorship in a not for profit environment
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Australian music industry and music education sector
  • Skills and experience in successful lobbying and advocacy and network development, at all levels of government, business and in the community
  • Excellent communication, liaison and negotiation skills, and solid background in building enduring partnerships, coalitions and alliances
