We are currently recruiting a Chief of Section (Private Partnerships & Philanthropy) to manage relationships with corporate, foundation and high net worth donors to continue to generate increased yearly funding for UNHCR’s programmes and build holistic strategic partnerships with the private sector.

About the role

The incumbent is a member of the Senior Leadership Team supporting the Private Sector Partnership (PSP) Head of Service. He/she will provide leadership, strategic direction and implementation for UNHCR’s Private Partnerships & Philanthropy programme in order to generate increased year on year funding for UNHCR.

The incumbent will also be responsible for managing relationships with corporate, foundation and high net worth donors (collectively called “Private Partnerships & Philanthropy”). The incumbent will also interact periodically with senior managers within UNHCR for consultations, appropriate relationship management of major donors and will directly and indirectly oversee colleagues and Private Partnerships & Philanthropy programmes throughout the PSP global network.

Primary responsibilities

The job holder will have the following key responsibilities:

• Provide leadership, strategic direction and implementation for UNHCR’s Private Partnerships & Philanthropy programme in order to generate increased yearly funding for UNHCR’s programmes and build holistic strategic partnerships with the private sector.
• Work closely with the UNHCR Senior Management Team to facilitate relationships with private sector leaders and donors, including strategic delivery of High Commissioner’s engagement with key partners and high net worth individuals (HNWIs).
• Collaborate with other UNHCR units, to ensure seamless and coordinated outreach to private sector across the organisation.
• Develop and implement UNHCR’s global strategy for resource mobilisation from companies, foundations, major donors, HNWIs and bequests.
• Provide line management of Global Private Partnerships & Philanthropy staff.
• Provide functional management of the Private Partnerships & Philanthropy staff in the Regional teams.
• Directly, and via the Private Sector Partnerships out-posted teams, solicit leadership gifts from UNHCR’s supporters.
• Set income targets in priority Private Partnerships & Philanthropy markets.
• Ensure that all Private Partnerships & Philanthropy fundraising activity is conducted in a manner consistent with UNHCR’s brand, culture and ethics, as well.
• Set clear strategy, policy and systems for delivery of partnerships with private sector globally.
• Manage and develop funding relationships with existing and potential international donors capable of giving sizable donations (e.g. $1 million annually and above).
• Guide colleagues in developing and disseminating UNHCR’s Private Partnerships & Philanthropy strategy and objectives by providing compelling argument for donor support to UNHCR.
• Generate agreement on major partnerships and donor relationships e.g. the Private Partnerships & Philanthropy Governing Board and key UNHCR donor support structures such as the Council of Business Leaders and other donor support/advisory groups to be created.
• Establish an agreed programme of cultivation/positioning events for Private Partnerships & Philanthropy supporters and prospects e.g. WEF/DAVOS, UNGA, UNGC in cooperation with the Executive Office.
• Support the Head of Private Sector Partnerships and Regional Managers to implement the Global Private Partnerships & Philanthropy strategy in the national and regional fundraising plans by providing functional management and guidance to Private Partnerships & Philanthropy Officers in the Regions.
• Research potential leadership donors for the wider Private Sector Partnerships Team.
• Represent Private Sector Partnerships Private Partnerships & Philanthropy strategy to other divisions/services/bureaus to identify programmes that require funding and developing project proposals.
• Identify key campaign funding opportunities and secure agreement on funding priorities for projects to be offered to leadership donors.
• Manage the annual budget for the Private Partnerships & Philanthropy team, fulfilling programming, monitoring and reporting requirements as set by Results-Based-Management parameters.
• Provide Private Partnerships & Philanthropy budget inputs to the overall Private Sector Partnerships budget detailing expenditure and income (actual/forecast), report on and support corrective action in the light of under performance against PPP income targets throughout the PSP network.
• Ensure that all approaches to prospects and donors and their outcomes are meticulously recorded in Salesforce.
• Ensure that all administrative and organization requirements of the Private Partnerships & Philanthropy team are completed in accordance with UNHCR’s policies and procedures.

Key results that will be achieved:

• Private Sector Partnerships has fully integrated Private Partnerships & Philanthropy strategies, plans, policy and systems.
• Private Sector Partnerships targets for Private Partnerships & Philanthropy are met according to plan.
• Private Sector Partnerships global and local teams received continuous guidance on management of Private Partnerships & Philanthropy prospects.

Profile

Experience

• Graduate degree (equivalent of a Master’s) in Marketing, Business Administration, Economics or Management plus minimum 11 years of previous job experience relevant to the function or Private Partnerships, Philanthropy, leadership fundraising experience with major fundraising organisations and/or with humanitarian agencies. Of which, a minimum of 10 years should be in an international capacity directly relevant to the current position that should include exposure to the work of companies, foundations and private philanthropists. Undergraduate degree (equivalent of a BA/BS) plus 12 years or Doctorate degree (equivalent of a PhD) plus 10 years of previous relevant work experience may also be accepted.
• Demonstrate at least 10 years’ experience in Private Partnerships & Philanthropy where they have led a team proving a long-term vision and strategic perspective.
• Have personally and via their team raised significant donations ($1 million plus) and managed a sizable major gift or capital fundraising programme ($10 million and above) from influential and wealthy people and/or, companies and/or foundations.
• Have had significant managerial experience as a member of the senior management team or similar in their previous employment.
• Experience of effective communication at senior levels and with wealthy and influential people, providing compelling case for support and PPP proposal.
• Excellent knowledge of English.
