The Uniting Church of Australia is one of the largest not for profit and faith-based organisations in Australia. Uniting Mission and Education's (UME) role, as a board of the Synod of NSW and the ACT, is to assist the Church to provide education, theological insight, strategy, research and resources for leadership, discipleship, ministry and mission.

About the role

The purpose of the Executive Officer position is to work closely with the Executive Director (ED) of UME to support the fulfilment of their role in strategic and operational leadership. The Executive Officer will have a focus on operational oversight, project management and representing UME to the wider church.

In particular, the role will:

Assist the ED with the provision of strategic advice to the UME Board to achieve UME’s mission.

Under the direction of the ED, co-ordinate, project-manage and/or support the strategies, goals and programs agreed by the UME Board.

Support the effective leadership of UME staff by the ED in conjunction with other UME leaders.

Work to ensure that agreed financial outcomes are achieved, including liaison with UR, to ensure management reporting is timely and effective.

Support effective governance; compliance with all regulatory requirements and the effective identification and management of risk.

Where directed by the ED, provide oversight of operations of UME services, including the development and maintenance of effective and robust processes and systems.

To represent UME and develop and sustain effective relationships are sustained within and across the Synod.

The keys to success in this role will be the ability to work proactively as part of a diverse team, demonstrated practical knowledge of project leadership, strategic and innovative thinking and exceptional communication skills. Along with a strong understanding of, and a passion for, discipleship, mission and leadership – previous experience in delivering strategic material to boards will be highly advantageous.

Our successful candidate will have significant experience in leadership within a complex and multifaceted organisation. Tertiary qualifications in a role-related field are essential, and a strong understanding or experience working within the not-for-profit or religious institution sector will be advantageous.
