About the Role

The GBRF is the lead charity for the Great Barrier Reef, dedicated exclusively to funding solutions for its long-term conservation.

They lead the collaboration of business, science, government and philanthropy – groups who would not otherwise come together – for the benefit of the Reef. Their success is due to the quality of institutions and people we bring together – harnessing advances in science, technology and industry to ensure a future for this global treasure.

Made up of 2,900 reefs along 2,300km of Queensland’s coastline, the Great Barrier Reef is one of the largest United Nations World Heritage areas, visible even from space! It contributes over $6bn annually to the Australian economy and generates more than 64,000 jobs.

Promoting a strategic, collaborative and coordinated approach, together with our partners in business, government and philanthropy, the GBRF have so far raised more than $80m to investigate and address the threats to the Great Barrier Reef.

On 29 April the Australian Government announced a $444 million grant to the GBRF, empowering them to lead the way globally in the protection of coral reefs in Australia and overseas.

OnTalent is thrilled to be partnering with GBRF to appoint a highly skilled and passionate Financial Controller to play a key role in the scaling up of the organisation in response to this incredible new investment commitment.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Financial Controller will have 2-3 direct reports.  This is an incredible opportunity to create your own high performing team to deliver on financial and management reporting, new suite of policy and procedures, implementing new systems with increased capacity, risk management, HR & IT, contract management, due diligence and compliance and overseeing an efficient governance process of the Foundation.

The role provides a pivotal link between the operations of the business and the Foundation’s Executive Leadership team, the Audit Committee, the Investment Committee and the Board.

We are seeking interest from candidates with the following experience and attributes:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications and CA/CPA status

  • Not for profit sector experience with a focus on commercial outcomes

  • An understanding of revenue recognition and the impact of new regulations on reporting

  • Experience establishing or transforming financial controls, reporting, systems, policies and frameworks in a growing, rapidly changing environment

  • Proven ability to form and lead a high performing and passionate team

  • Strategic mindset and ability to connect financial management to overall business objectives

  • Excellent communication skills and experience building deep relationships with external stakeholders

  • A solutions focussed/analytical and innovative approach to supporting the organisation through growth

  • Excellent financial modelling skills to support commercial decision making

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of an organisation committed to the conservation of a globally iconic World Heritage site.  The culture is deeply committed, passionate and dedicated to the cause.
