 Position description

Koorana is a not‐for‐profit child and family services provider with a mission to provide learning opportunities for all children and their families in a caring environment. The group has recently experienced a period of unprecedented growth. The organisation has invested in preparing for implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and has largely transitioned to the new requirements of the NDIS, as well as additional opportunities which this scheme will present.

The Koorana Board is currently made up of 8 Non-executive Directors, including the President. The Board, as part of succession planning is seeking to maintain the appropriate mix of skills and level of professionalism for the size of the organisation and the on-going period of sector change.

NEDs are required to attend bi‐monthly Board meetings, as well as an Annual General Meeting. It is anticipated that members will be required to sit on a sub‐committee, as well as attend occasional key events. The time commitment is in the order of 5 to 10 hours per month.

The Board currently meets bi-monthly on Mondays from 6.30pm – 8.30pm at the Koorana office in Belmore. There are additional Board meetings on an ‘as needed’ basis.

Challenger’s and opportunities

As one of many contestable national disability insurance scheme marketplace providers, we have been enhancing our customer centric delivery models for some 18 months. In a continually changing service environment, we are committed to ongoing growth opportunities and continuous quality improvement. We have a reputation for high quality service delivery across our existing services, and this continues to be an ongoing focus. We are looking to leverage the potential of digital engagement, as much as our future physical footprint in other parts of Sydney. Our board is called upon to support this, from strategic guidance to playing a frontline role in the appropriate networking forums to support advocacy.

Selection criteria

We are seeking skilled, experienced and highly motivated NEDs, ideally with Board participation, and experience in the following areas:

  • Finance and accounting
  • Corporate Governance
  • Understanding of the NDIS service delivery framework
  • Service delivery related to the social welfare, education and/or health sectors
  • Change management
  • Digital Engagement
  • Marketing and Communications

Individuals should have had exposure to or experience in the following:

  • Strategy
  • Compliance
  • Leadership
  • Children’s Services
  • Disability services

Individuals must be able to demonstrate that they empathise with and have a strong interest in the role that Koorana plays in the community. Prior executive leadership experience in the sector will be considered favourably.

Remuneration

As indicated directors will not be remunerated but will be reimbursement for travel and accommodation, and professional development where appropriate.
