MAV is incorporated as a Public Company, and as such becoming a Council member means becoming an official company Director as per the Corporations Act.

You should ensure that you understand the requirements of being a Director before committing to nominate for this responsibility.

The Council are an official Company Board: The Councillors jointly as the Council (Board) provide leadership, set strategic and policy direction; and oversee the business and affairs of the association for the purpose for which the association is established. The Council is accountable to the members of the association for the overall performance and governance of the association.

The Council Charter provides a detailed description of the requirements of becoming a Director (Councillor). It is highly recommended that you read this Council Charter prior to submitting your expression of interest to ensure that you can fulfil the responsibilities of being a Director. A commitment to the following meeting dates is required for 2018:

Sunday, 28 October 2018: PLANNING SESSION 10.00am to 3:00pm (if appointed in time),
Tuesday, 20 Nov 2018: Council Meeting from 5.30pm,
Wed 19 Dec 2018, from 5.30pm: MAV Christmas Drinks for stakeholders.

Dates for 2019 TBC but will include:

Meeting early Feb,
Meeting Late March,
AGM in May.

About the role

The MAV Council is seeking expressions of interest from appropriately experienced people to join the MAV Council as Directors.

In order to ensure a diverse representation of stakeholders in Victoria, the MAV Council is considering appointing 2 further Directors with an interest in the mathematics education sector. This will strengthen the current mix of expertise in the Board and support diverse thinking and strong decision making.

MAV works across all sectors of education including early childhood, primary and secondary schools, TAFE, VET, VCAL and universities. We partner with industry in many programs to focus on STEM, careers and raising the importance of mathematics in society. MAV run programs for both students ad educators state wide.

You will require a strong interest in, and desire to build knowledge of mathematics education issues.

Your experience should include either:

  • Position 1: Parents of current students/School Council experience, to bring an independent view, as a person who does not work in the education industry but has a strong interest in education.
  • Position 2: Marketing/Communications expertise: a person with skills in marketing and communication, which could include advocacy and policy work to support development and refinement of MAV’s communications to members and the wider education community.

In order to contribute effectively to the Council, personal qualities should include integrity, curiosity, interpersonal skills, active contributor, genuine interest in the sector, ability to analyse situations, draw conclusions and make decisions.

Candidates with previous governance or director experience are highly desirable. Those based in a regional area will be considered with the option of attending some meetings via video conference.

The appointment will be until May 2018, although successful candidates will be encouraged to nominate for re-appointment at the next AGM, or may be co-opted by Council for a further term.

MAV Council positions are voluntary with 6 meetings per year plus involvement in a committee or supporting activities.
