About the organisation

Organisation Name : Jilamara Arts and Crafts Association

Jilamara Arts and Crafts Association is an indigenous owned, non-profit organisation based at Milikapiti, an aboriginal community on Melville Island. The community, which lies 100km North of Darwin and is accessible through a twice daily air service, has a store, social club, health clinic and primary school and is surrounded by beaches and bushland.

Jilamara operates as an art centre open to all Tiwi people living in Milikapiti and its associated outstations, and currently provides a service for up to 50 artists. It is a highly respected indigenous art centre that maintains relationships with commercial galleries and public institutions around Australia and operates a regular national exhibitions schedule. A number of key figures in Indigenous art have practised through the centre including the late Kitty Kantilla and more recently Pedro Wonaeamirri, Raelene Kerinauia, Janice Murray and Timothy Cook. The organisation also operates the Ngawa Mantawi program, an integrated support service for artists with disabilities, allowing them to participate in the same activities as other Tiwi artists.

Jilamara has benefited from major construction and renovations resulting in an architecturally designed gallery and the upgrade of the community museum.

Please see our new website at jilamara.com for further information about our art centre.

About the role
