WestWords is a literary service organisation based in Parramatta. It began as a project funded by Arts NSW in 2007 and was established to promote and encourage reading, writing and story-making by, and for, children and young people living in Western Sydney. In December 2014 it registered as not-for-profit company. Now in its fourth year, with centres in Parramatta, Campbelltown and Katoomba with Blacktown opening soon, it enjoys wide recognition as a leader in the literary sector, delivering programs across Western Sydney, developing and enhancing community sustainability through cultural vitality. 

About the role

Position Description
Position title: Development Manager
Commencement date: 4th September, 2018
Location: Parramatta, Sydney
Hours: part time (3 days p/w)
Salary: $70,000 p.a. (pro-rata to 0.6 – $42,000) + plus super
Basis of employment: 1 year contract, with potential to renew
Employment conditions: four weeks annual leave (pro rata) and 3 months probationary period
Reports to: Executive Director

Purpose of Position:
The Development Manager is expected to develop (in collaboration with the Executive Director) and drive WestWords’ fundraising strategy. There will be a focus on generating sustainable forms of income through benefaction, partnerships, grants, foundations and trusts, and meeting financial targets in a competitive environment. Working with the Executive Director, this key role will be responsible for securing funds and supporting organisational initiatives; cultivating leads, identifying opportunities and increasing WestWords’ supporter base; providing exceptional stakeholder management and increasing engagement; and developing proposals and negotiating agreements; and to provide accurate and timely administrative support.

Personal Characteristics
Highly motivated individual, able to work autonomously and as part of a small team. Strong attention to detail and ability to multi-task.

Key Selection Criteria

Essential criteria
1 Demonstrated experience in seeking and securing financial support from individuals, trusts, foundations and government agencies.
2 Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Australian contemporary arts/culture sector, and its capacity for cultural and social impacts.
3 Demonstrated effective planning, organisational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks to meet required timeframes and outcomes.
4 Outstanding written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills with the capacity to build strong relationships and demonstrated commitment to stakeholder management.
5 Highly developed research and analysis skills with an attention to detail.
6 Current driver’s license.

Desirable Criteria
• Knowledge of literature practice in Australia.
• Knowledge of the education sector.

Additional requirements
• Ability to work, at times, on projects outside normal business hours.
• Ability to work in a small office environment.
• Current (or application in process) working with children certificate.
