The Northern Community Legal Centre (NCLC) formed in early 2016 following an amalgamation of the former Broadmeadows Community Legal Service and Moreland Community Legal Centre. NCLC operates in one of the fastest growing and disadvantaged areas of Melbourne and has a significant catchment including the Hume City Council, Moreland City Council and Mitchell Shire Council. NCLC operates from a central office located in Broadmeadows, with outreach services within health, youth and settlement services across our catchment.

NCLC’s purpose is to ensure equal access to justice for all in Melbourne’s North West through the provision of legal services and community development, legal education and law reform activities aimed at the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in Melbourne’s North West. NCLC gives priority to victims/survivors of family violence, refugees and newly arrived communities, people who have a diagnosed mental illness, young people and older people who are suffering abuse.

About the role

The Immigration Lawyer  position will be responsible for providing high quality immigration law advice and casework to victims/survivors of family violence.  This role will form part of a team including a Project Officer (PO) for a newly funded project ‘Abused and Abandoned: Family Violence in the Australian Indian Community’. This project aims to:

  1. Advance the understanding of the complex problem of family violence in the Australian Indian community
  2. Identify gaps in the family violence service system and state and federal laws which add to the vulnerability of Indian women and
  3. Advocate for effective legal and non-legal protections. As such this role will have significant input into research and law reform responsibilities.
