The Opportunity

The Team Leader position will provide leadership, direction and support to youth services, the Leaving Care – Post Care program, Kurnai Youth Homelessness and Better Future’s Service.

Leaving Care – Post Care aims to provide support and practical assistance to young people aged between 16-21 years who are exiting, or have left out of home care.

Kurnai Youth Homelessness provides advocacy, outreach, support and referral for people aged 15-25 who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

Better Futures provides assertive, outcomes focused, flexible and tailored support to young people as they transition from, and live independent of, out of home care. They are eligible for Better Futures if they:

  • Have been on a family reunification order, a care by secretary order or a long-term care order; and
  • On leaving the care of the Secretary, are of an age to, or intends to, live independently.

To be considered for this role you must demonstrate

  • Awareness and appreciation of Aboriginal communities and culture and an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal people in contemporary Australia
  • An ability to work in a culturally respectful and competent manner with young people, their families and communities to ensure that cultural connections are fostered and maintained
  • A proven ability to advocate on behalf of children and families.
  • An ability to work effectively with Aboriginal organizations, government departments and community service organizations.
  • A well-developed understanding of Child Protection issues and in particular the characteristics and needs of young people leaving care or who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
  • Ability to provide supervision to staff and conduct staff appraisals.
  • Ability to lead and maintain a small team of staff, as well as participating in larger teams
  • Sound communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to negotiate effectively at a senior level across the service sector.
