Key areas of research include infectious and immune diseases, cancer and leukemia, liver and metabolic diseases, eye and brain related disorders and heart and respiratory disorders.

Closely affiliated with the University of Sydney and Westmead Hospital, the Institute’s research is truly translational, with many of the researchers also actively practicing clinicians. This “bench to bedside” approach means that there is practical application of research discoveries into prevention strategies, diagnostics and patient treatments.

An opportunity exists for a highly organised and energetic Relationship Manager Gifts in Wills to join the newly established Westmead Institute for Medical Research Foundation, forming an integral member of a small start-up Development team.

 Job Description

Reporting to the CEO Westmead Institute for Medical Research Foundation, you will work collaboratively to manage the Gifts in Wills revenue stream, an essential element of the Development strategy. You will build strong and enduring relationships with key stakeholder groups, with a focus on Gifts in Wills prospects, intending and confirmed Gifters to the Westmead Institute for Medical Research Foundation.

You will apply your well-developed relationship management skills to identify, evaluate and pursue Gifts in Wills prospects. You will relish the challenge of building relationships from the ground up, working closely with the CEO to implement a targeted Gifts in Wills strategy.

As the Foundation is in start-up phase, you will have the capacity to independently research key prospects, to engage and identify donor prospects, to represent the Westmead Institute for Medical Research effectively, informing the existing and potential donor base of the Institute’s scope of service and opportunities for financial support. In conjunction with the CEO, you will develop and implement a Gifts in Wills Program that inspires people with an interest in medical research to include a charitable gift for the Westmead Institute for Medical Research. You will also be focussed on managing and retaining Gifters once confirmed.

Reporting to the CEO Westmead Institute for Medical Research Foundation, the Relationship Manager Gifts in Wills is responsible for developing, implementing and managing an effective Gifts in Wills Program to ensure ongoing revenue is directed to the Westmead Institute for Medical Research Foundation via this revenue stream. Importantly, you will steward Gifters effectively, ensuring their long-term commitment to supporting the Institute’s work.

Specific responsibilities will include:

  • In conjunction with the CEO, develop strong relationships with potential, intending and confirmed Gifters who have an interest in medical research and the operations of WIMR.
  • In conjunction with the CEO, develop and implement an effective plan for an strong Gifts in Wills Program, growing a sustainable Gifts in Wills revenue pipeline encompassing Gifts in Wills, In Memorial and In Celebration Giving.
  • Maintain and nurture positive relationships with supporters within the Gifts in Wills Program for cultivation, solicitation and stewardship purposes.
  • In conjunction with the CEO, build strong and enduring relationships with the stewards of trusts and foundations.

Key skills and experience required:

  • Proven experience in successfully developing and managing a portfolio of donors or clients in a competitive industry environment.
  • Proven ability to research prospects and develop a donor or customer base.
  • Proven ability to generate income by establishing successful long-term relationships.
  • A strong drive for results and evidence of managing and growing income/profit over time.
  • An ability to relate sensitively to a diverse range of people and to conduct face to face meetings with a diverse range of donors with different backgrounds and personalities.

Qualifications and experience required:

  • At least 10 years of experience within a busy, corporate environment. You are able to demonstrate success in delivering solid outcomes against tight timeframes/under pressure.

Attitude and Mindset:

  • Enthusiasm, energy and passion are key to achieving success in this role.
  • Ability to engage fellow colleagues and team members and other internal diverse stakeholders, including researchers and clinicians.
  • Confidence in presenting and coordinating various stakeholder groups including senior management, internal and external to the Westmead Institute for Medical Research and the Foundation.
