About the organisation

Organisation Name : Carbon Market Institute via People for Purpose

The Carbon Market Institute is dedicated to helping business seize opportunities in rapidly evolving carbon markets. Independent and non-partisan, it is the peak industry body for climate change and business.

About the role

  • Genuine opportunity to address the challenge of climate change
  • Use your professional management, strategic and advocacy skills
  • Represent a diverse and growing member base

The Carbon Market Institute is at the centre of climate change policy & business in Australia.  Established in 2012, the Carbon Market Institute (CMI) is Australia’s leading peak body dedicated to helping business seize opportunities in rapidly evolving carbon markets. Independent, non-partisan and constructive, the CMI works across the political divide and brings government and industry together to create pragmatic and lasting market-based solutions to address the challenge of climate change.

Engaging leaders, shaping and influencing policy and driving action, the CMI helps business to respond positively to opportunities in the transition to a low carbon economy by facilitating knowledge sharing and commercial interactions between businesses, thought leaders, financiers, technology, service providers and key policy makers. The organisation helps companies understand how they will be impacted by the economic transformation underway and how Australian business can develop, promote and deploy pragmatic, real world solutions to developing economies and climate-affected communities around the world.

Positioned as a highly respected organisation that will continue to have real impact and influence on climate change mitigation in Australia, the CMI is now at an exciting time in its evolution and is looking for a commercially astute Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to build on the strong reputation of the organisation and to lead and inspire its growth.

As CEO, you will be the public face of the CMI and be responsible for the design and delivery of the vision, strategy and programs of the organisation. This includes managing critical relationships with all facets of government, CMI members and other key stakeholders.  You will have a creative and entrepreneurial approach to the future of the CMI underpinned by a robust commercial framework to ensure financial sustainability.  You will oversee delivery of core projects and programs, in particular the annual Australasian Emissions Reduction Summit which has successfully built a reputation as the largest climate change and business event in Australia, increasing regional interest and influence.  You will also lead the overall governance, financial management and operation of the CMI.

Working closely with the board of directors, you will be responsible for strategic and operational business planning and performance, and the management of day-to-day operations, people and resources.  Your ability to lead, motivate and inspire a small, professional and passionate team will be critical.

As CEO of a peak body, you will ensure that the CMI best represents and supports its diverse member base. This includes leading policy and advocacy development and being a primary spokesperson for the organisation and its members; ensuring that a highly informed and credible business voice is heard and valued “inside the tent”.

Using your exceptional and well-honed communication and relationship management skills, you will be committed to engaging a wide range of stakeholders including members, government, industry and media.  This is an outstanding opportunity for a commercially astute and entrepreneurial leader with strong strategic, financial, operational and people management skills gained in the public or the private sector.  A deep experience and sophisticated understanding of, and interest in, current Australian and global affairs and trends relating to carbon markets and climate change would be highly regarded.

This role is fulltime and may involve after-hours networking and travel, both international and domestic.
