Volunteer Management Committee (Board) Members

 The Opportunity

South West Sydney Legal Centre invites suitably experienced people with a commitment to social justice to submit expressions of interest for three (3) volunteer roles on our Management Committee.  We are seeking a Treasurer and two general members.

As the South West Sydney Legal Centre’s governing body, it is the role of the Management Committee to provide strategic direction to the organisation and oversight of its management and accountability.

 About the Committee

Our Management Committee meets for approximately 3 hours (after business hours), every 6-8 weeks at our Liverpool office.  Between meetings, Members often further engage in discussions, feedback and planning by phone and email. Members are elected for a period of 1 year – seeking re-election at the annual AGM.  However, we are looking for individuals willing and able to make an overall commitment for 3 years or more.

About the positions

A critical element in the success of South West Sydney Legal Centre is a strong and supportive Management Committee, and we are currently looking for a Treasurer and two general Committee Members to join us. These roles are voluntary and unpaid.  SWSLC will consider the reimbursement of costs associated with a member’s ability to participate in meetings (eg travel or child care).

Ideal candidates will have:

  • an understanding of human service delivery or the justice system
  • a strong commitment to social justice
  • a strong commitment to collaborative decision making
  • an interest in South West Sydney and it’s communities
  • effective communication skills.

Additional desirable skills include:

  • Experience in corporate governance in the context of a not for profit organisation
  • Skills and experience in, one or more of the following areas:

–     Accounting/Financial Management (a prerequisite for the Treasurer role)

–     Risk and Compliance

–     Organisational Development

–     Marketing and Communications

–     Human Resources

–     Fundraising

–     Community Engagement

–     Information Technology

It is not necessary to have a legal background for these volunteer position but practicing solicitors are encouraged to submit an expression of interest. We encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds including applicants from Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander backgrounds to submit an expression of interest.
