Work type : Full-time
Sector : Conservation & Environment, Law, Justice & Human Rights

Application closing date : 1 Jul, 2019
About the organisation
Environmental Defenders Offices (EDOs) in Australia have been progressively established over the last 34 years as independent state and territory offices, each with its own board and constitution, acting as accredited community legal centres, specialising in public interest environmental law serving their local communities on a not for profit basis. There are eight offices: NSW, Queensland, North Queensland, Northern Territory, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania and ACT.
The core objectives of all EDOs have been and will continue to be:
- Protecting the environment through law
- Actively engaging in policy and law reform processes to improve environmental laws.
- Ensuring that the community receives expert legal advice and representation in public interest environmental matters.
- Building community skills and knowledge to facilitate public participation in environmental decision-making.
In 2018 a collective decision was made to move towards a single constituted entity. Each enjoining entity would be wound up and assets transferred in their entirety to Environmental Defenders Office Australia (EDOA) through the carrying entity of EDO NSW, which is the largest and the only entity constituted as a company limited by guarantee. EDOA will continue to deliver environmental legal services from the established offices as a professional services organisation solely focused on delivering environmental legal services to benefit the public.
About the role
The position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) EDOA is a newly created position aimed at providing leadership in promoting and protecting the environment at regional, state and national levels through the informed use of the law and other supporting strategies including public interest lawyering, policy and law reform, community legal education with a multi-disciplinary approach supported by sound science, and responsible use of communication and media.
The CEO of EDOA will work closely with, and report to, the Chair and the EDOA Board (the Board).
The CEO will be responsible for providing strategic and financial leadership to the national entity and will, in the first 12 months, build a successful single entity from the enjoining state based entities. The CEO will provide leadership to successfully implement the Board’s priorities and plans to achieve the company’s strategic goals. The CEO will build and manage EDOA’s day-to-day operations to ensure it meets its statutory obligations and provides the required services within its environmental law frame work and through the implementation of its Strategic Plan, Annual Business Plan and Budget.
