About the organisation
Amnesty International, with its seven million passionate and committed grassroots supporters, is campaigning to eradicate these violations. We could be doing more in Australia to be a world leader on human rights but due to our failures on Indigenous and refugee rights and new draconian laws we have a long way to go. We are putting the spotlight on governments, corporations and other powerful actors and demanding they address human rights violations that target people in poverty. At the same time, we continue to oppose torture, the death penalty and political and identity-based persecution.
About the role
The courage to expose and speak out about human rights abuses has become more important than ever, with leaders around the globe pushing agendas based on a narrative of blame, hate and fear.
The Board of Amnesty International Australia (AIA) seeks applications for the next National Director, who will be a leader in progressing this work, strengthening AIA’s position in the international human rights movement, developing partnerships outside AIA, and building stronger links with its multitude of internal stakeholders.
To address the challenges in a complex global environment, we need organisational impact and effectiveness, new approaches to campaigning through rapidly shifting communications technologies and the ability to manage development and change. The National Director is the operational leader of AIA and will need to enact strategies that enhance and maintain AIA’s human resource management, activist and volunteer engagement, and organisational health and culture so that we are united in action against human rights violations.
The next National Director will require an exceptional range of skills and experience. Above all, this person must demonstrate a deep commitment to challenging human rights abuse in all forms and the authority, credible experience, management skills and insight to lead AIA. S/he will be both an inspiring political strategist and have the acumen to lead a complex organisation undergoing significant change to its governance and structure.
