About The Centre for Social Impact (CSI)

The Centre for Social Impact (CSI) is a national research and education centre dedicated to catalysing social change for a better world. CSI is built on the foundation of three of Australia’s leading universities: UNSW Sydney, The University of Western Australia, and Swinburne University of Technology.

Our research develops and brings together knowledge to understand current social challenges and opportunities; our postgraduate and undergraduate education develops social impact leaders; and we aim to catalyse change by drawing on these foundations and translating knowledge, creating leaders, developing usable resources, and reaching across traditional divides to facilitate collaborations.

CSI National and CSI UNSW is located on the UNSW Sydney campus (Kensington) within the UNSW Business School where the centre is aligned with the strategic priorities of the University and from where it leads interactions with students, alumni, industry, government, professional bodies, and the community. 

CSI UNSW comprises research, education and operations teams, a national marketing & communications team and the national CSI CEO.


About the role

  • $93,578 – $100,090 + 9.5% Superannuation
  • 12 month Fixed-term
  • Full-time (35 hours per week) – Part-time working arrangements will also be considered

The Research Associate will conduct collaborative and self-directed research that aligns with the Centre’s research objectives. This position will work under the direction of the CSI UNSW Research Co-Director on projects examining gender dynamics in STEMM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine), using qualitative research methodologies, such as interviews and participant observation. The position will also contribute to the centre’s reputation for research leadership in social impact by establishing a strong, thriving, high quality research environment.

The role of Research Associate reports to CSI UNSW Research co-Director and has 0 direct reports.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Undertaking qualitative (and, if appropriate, quantitative) research in the area of gender dynamics in STEMM.
  • Managing and conducting literature reviews, ethics applications, research recruitment, data collection, (including with vulnerable population groups), coding and research records.
  • Supporting the end to end development and execution of research projects ensuring milestones and deadlines are met.
  • Preparing reports, presentations, grant applications, posters and manuscripts for an expert audience and for peer review.
  • Monitoring and managing changing and/or emerging issues in research projects and provide advice and/or solutions in areas of responsibility and escalating where necessary.
  • Engaging effectively with stakeholders and the research community and ensure CSI and UNSW is well represented, including participating in events where needed.

About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will:

  • Hold a PhD (or soon to be awarded) in Social Sciences or a related discipline and research expertise in gender studies and/or women in non-tradiitional careers.
  • Demonstrate qualitative research skills, including experience of interviewing, focus groups and ideally participant observation.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of relevant IT software including Microsoft Office, Nvivo and Endnote.
  • Proven capacity for self-directed project management, data collection and analysis, and an ability to work to agreed timelines.
  • Demonstrate ability to undertake independent research and work positively and cooperatively as part of a team in a teaching and research environment.
