About the programs
Next Steps is funded by the Department of Health & Human Services and highly regarded in the provision of support to vulnerable young people aged 16-24, who intersect the criminal justice system and who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
Next Steps delivers intensive case management support addressing the issues of homelessness and offending and incorporating therapeutic elements responding to trauma, intergenerational disadvantage and fractured family relationships. Next Steps has several unique components to deliver therapeutic services to young people, including family focused counselling.
Based at Dillon House, our 24/7 residential program, the position involves working with both residential and outreach participants. The family counsellor will be flexible in their approach, conducting outreach counselling to young people and families and providing secondary consultation to the team.
About the role
We are looking for an enthusiastic flexible practitioner to provide a range of therapeutic interventions appropriate to the program participants and their families in the role of Family Counsellor.
In addition to direct service delivery the position includes capacity building to the Next Steps case workers and After hours support workers in the provision of a therapeutic, trauma informed, family centred response to young people in the program.
The position is part time (0.4 EFT) based in Carlton.
Candidate requirements
To be successful in this role you will need to demonstrate:
- Tertiary qualification/s in the Social Sciences, Social Work or Psychology or advanced training in counselling with a focus on family therapy is desirable.
- Ability to work therapeutically with disadvantaged young people and their families.
- Counselling skills relevant to young people with multiple and complex needs.
- Understanding of the provision of family focused practice when working with young people.
- Experience working in an assertive outreach capacity.
- Experience in collecting, collating and reporting on data for program evaluation purposes.
