Salvos Legal Humanitarian is a pro-bono law firm owned by The Salvation Army that acts for clients for free in the areas of migration/refugee law, family law, child protection, administrative law, credit and debt, housing, Centrelink matters and criminal law. Each week, SLH provides legal services to dozens of clients on a pro bono basis by providing legal advice, assistance and representation across these diverse practice areas.

About the role

A unique opportunity has become available for an experienced solicitor with at least four years’ Post Qualification Experience who has a passion for helping disadvantaged and marginalised people and who possesses significant legal experience in delivering high quality, efficient and professional advice and representation in a fast-paced environment.

The successful candidate will be closely mentored by our senior lawyer in Sydney in a role which requires an ability to provide advice and representation in client matters, project management and administration, as well as supervising the work of volunteer lawyers in delivering advice to clients at Advice Bureaus. This role will also involve revising the design and conduct of training for volunteer lawyers and working on the revision of legal resources and precedents.

Selection Criteria

Required:

  • Possession of an unrestricted legal practising certificate, or eligibility to hold one;
  • A minimum of four years’ Post Qualification legal experience;
  • Legal experience in a range of Salvos Legal Humanitarian’s practice areas and litigation/dispute resolution generally;
  • Demonstrated experience in working with people who are disadvantaged and marginalised through pro bono work or otherwise;
  • Strong administrative, organisational skills and excellent attention to detail;
  • Outstanding interpersonal, communication and client interaction skills (including excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills);
  • Excellent time management skills and a demonstrated ability to meet deadlines;
  • Team-focused but also able to work independently;
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders; and
  • Sound computer skills within a legal practice environment

Desired:

  • Experience working in a private practice environment;
  • Demonstrated experience supervising professional staff or volunteers;
  • Sound knowledge of the legal issues that commonly arise for people experiencing disadvantage and self-represented clients; and
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and be resourceful.
