About the role

As an Advocate based at our Bundaberg office, you will provide information and support to individuals or groups of individuals with disability, and their associates, to promote and protect their human, legal and service user rights in accordance with the National Disability Service Standards. Around 50% of your caseload will be to support people with disability wanting to engage with the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability.

PWDA’s Individual and Group Advocacy Service provides short-term, issue-based individual and group advocacy assistance for people with disability and their associates. It provides information, advice and referral services and intensive individual advocacy assistance.

This is a part-time role of 42 hours per fortnight. It will be a maximum term contract role until June 2022, with a possibility of extension, dependent of funding. Award Classification is Level 5 under the Social, Community, Home Care & Disability Services Award 2010. PWDA pays above Award, and the salary package on offer is $81,228 (pro rata of $48,737 for 0.6FTE) plus salary packaging and superannuation.

Selection Criteria

Essential

  • Understanding and commitment to the rights and interests of people with disability
  • Demonstrated experience in working with clients who have been impacted by violence
  • Understanding of the range of possible impacts violence can have on people with disability
  • Knowledge of community services sector and complaints handling bodies in QLD
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to liaise with a wide range of people such as clients, their associates, services providers and government departments
  • Demonstrated capacity to manage time frames and competing priorities
  • Strong documentation skills
  • Cultural competency
  • Computer literacy

Desirable

  • Personal or family experience of disability
  • Previous experience in the community services sector
  • Degree in social work, psychology, law or related discipline
