About the organisation

Organisation Name : Asylum Seeker Resource Centre

The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) is the largest aid, employment, health and advocacy organisation for people seeking asylum in Australia. The ASRC provides a range of direct services as well as participating in law reform, campaigning and lobbying.

About the role

An exciting opportunity exists for Director of the ASRC Social Enterprise stream, with two primary focus areas. Firstly to lead two existing, highly successful enterprises, through critical scaling phases. Secondly, to assess the viability of new social enterprises opportunities, and initiate them where appropriate.

Social Enterprise Stream

The Social Enterprise Stream provide a pathway to sustainable, open employment for people seeking asylum, currently through two social enterprises
  1. ASRC Catering (established 2005) is the only catering business in Melbourne whose food reflects the rich and diverse cultures of our asylum seeker members. It services all types of functions, across a broad client base, from multi-day conferences to weddings.
  2. ASRC Cleaning (established 2013) provides domestic and commercial cleaning services to the Melbourne and metropolitan area.
The employment created for our members by these two businesses is almost always their first in Australia and provides them with valuable Australian work experience, on-the-job industry standard training, and regular income to allow them to live independently. Equally important, many of our members have regained their self-confidence, become connected to their new home, and are using their experience to build a sustainable future.

Together they currently provide employment to approximately 70 people seeking asylum. Their growth has been rapid with combined annual operating revenue of over $2.5m. Importantly they are now both self sustaining businesses, funding growth plans through reinvestment of their own profits.

To date their growth has been largely organic, relying on word-of-mouth and the support of loyal customers and supporters. Both Enterprises have been successful in their own right and have received industry recognition through winning awards including the Age Good Food Guide “Food for Good Award” and Social Traders’ “Social Enterprise of the Year Award” for Catering and “Social Enterprises of the Year – Finalist” for Cleaning.

These businesses have enormous unlocked potential and are well-placed for scale, and must scale in order to help meet the increased demand for employment for people seeking asylum. The successful candidate will be responsible for building on the growth plans and embedding the marketing, business partnering, IT solutions, program transformation, and expansion.
