Organisation Name : Save Our Sons Duchenne Foundation

Save Our Sons Duchenne Foundation was founded in 2008 and is now Australia’s peak body for Duchenne & Becker muscular dystrophy, fighting to find a cure.


Duchenne & Becker muscular dystrophy is a muscle wasting condition, it is the most common muscular genetic disorder amongst children. One in every 3500 newborn boys have Duchenne. Very rarely it also affects girls (approximately 1 in 50 million girls). The condition is fatal, with most children living to their mid-late twenties.

Save Our Sons funds scientific research and clinical trials for our ultimate goal of finding a cure. Until then, Save Our Sons funds Duchenne specific nurses in major children’s hospitals across Australia, and run various programs to enhance the lives of those living with Duchenne.

About the role

Responsibilities of the Community Engagement Officer role will include:

  • Undertake community consultations and needs analyses to identify the needs and issues experienced by the Duchenne and Becker community and develop strategies for the creation of appropriate projects and activities to assist persons with Duchenne and Becker and their families.
  • Identify funding opportunities and develop funding proposals to support the implementation of new projects to address identified needs and issues.
  • Support members of the Duchenne and Becker community and providing accurate, empathetic and compassionate advice and assistance relating to their concerns and needs.
  • Work with community organisations and stakeholders, including schools, to raise awareness of Duchenne and Becker and educate people about the conditions.
  • Liaise with existing and new groups to provide information to increase their participation with the Foundation.
  • Participate in local and other community networks relevant to this position to exchange information, promote the work of the Foundation, and strengthen collaboration with service providers and stakeholders.
  • Develop and support capacity building and social inclusion activities.
  • Develop and implement a program of school holiday activities for children and youth and implement at least one youth camp per year in collaboration with existing community partners.
  • Lead the implementation of the Foundation’s Community Outreach Program and Volunteering Program.
  • Promote activities and events to the community as well as through community

networks.

  • Maintain relevant records and statistics for each Annual Reporting period.
  • Provision of a written monthly work report to the General Manager.
  • Undertake other duties as required by the General Manager in line with the responsibilities of the role.

 

Key attributes required are:

  • Knowledge and understanding of the health and disability sector and directly relevant experience in the field
  • Experience coordinating and facilitating youth and adult programs, events and activities within a community setting
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and evaluate community awareness programs.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • A proactive, service-focussed attitude
  • An ability to prioritise work and complete tasks with quick turnaround times and minimal fuss
  • The ability to work collaboratively within a team.

Tertiary qualifications in Health Promotion, Public Health, Community Development, Social/Behavioural Science, Social Work/Planning or a related discipline highly regarded but not essential.
