Build the new mental health consumer representative peak for Queensland from the ground up!

The purpose of the new Peak is to provide informed policy advice and system advocacy from a consumer perspective, based on the principles of equity, access, recovery, and human rights. The organisation will represent the collective interests of mental health consumers, of all ages, across Queensland – particularly those from marginalised and disadvantaged groups.    

The project to establish the new Peak has been managed by a lived experience Project Team and governed by a majority lived experience Project Steering Committee. With the hard preparatory work done, the search is now underway for a visionary and hands-on Interim CEO to launch the organisation, continue to champion a culture of lived experience engagement and leadership, and lay the foundations to grow a strong, sustainable and viable Peak body.

This is a highly influential role which will involve fostering close relationships with stakeholders to build the organisation’s reputation and profile, ensuring it becomes an integral part of the sector and is trusted and respected by consumers. Ideally, you are a seasoned CEO – well-connected, resilient, self-reliant and tenacious, with an abiding energy for human rights, social justice, and harnessing the influence of lived experience to drive strategic direction of this organisation. Your passion may very well come from your own personal lived experience of mental ill-health and service use. With exceptional strategic and leadership skills, you demonstrate creativity, intellect and sound judgement, are practiced in working hand in glove with a Board of Governance, and bring with you with an excellent track record of business, people and relationship management.

To take up this challenge, you will need to have built a successful business from the ground up (or radically transformed one) so that you are familiar with both the pitfalls and the positives. Reporting to the Board, you will lead the new Peak through its first year, developing the organisation’s strategic positioning, marketing and branding and ensuring it has the human, material and financial resources it needs to operate effectively.

Operationally sound, financially astute, HR positive and technology savvy, you are progressive and innovative but steady and reassuring. Purpose driven, an honest and hard worker, you are courageous, well-liked by your colleagues and committed to your community. You have business nous, take responsibility for outcomes, and deliver what you promise. In short you have all the proven resources and attributes you need to singlehandedly set up this brand new organisation – with an informed and very supportive Board at your back.

In terms of your professional background and expertise, we have an open mind. An ideal candidate would bring a sterling record across diverse membership and peak bodies, non-profit management, substantial work in the human services, health and/or mental health sector and be well connected to the multi-faceted role leading this eagerly awaited and highly-anticipated organisation.

While this is an interim CEO role (a 12-month contract), the successful candidate will be eligible to apply for the permanent vacancy.
