Your exciting new employer
SHINE for Kids is the only national charity provider of infancy, youth, and family programs for families impacted by incarceration. To lead the WA Acacia Correctional Programs Team, you will need to be passionate about providing life-changing programs to strengthen family bonds.

The impact you will have
This pivotal role will report to the National Operations Manager, who supports you as you build a team of Volunteers to rollout programs such as:

  1. Keeping Us Together – helping Dads in custody to improve their relationship with their child through mindfulness and reflection
  2. Storytime – building parental bonds and literacy by recording bedtime stories for their child
  3. InVisits – Supporting positive family interaction through arts, crafts, and visiting area activities

Your background could be one of education, community services, child protection, or family services. You will be passionate about driving programs designs to break the fragmenting cycle of parent and child separation.

A typical day will involve

  • Promoting the safety and emotional wellbeing of young people
  • Running the above program sessions for parents in custody
  • Planning fun, age-appropriate, culturally sensitive, and safe programs
  • Regular communication and progress reviews with correctional staff, families, and parents in custody
  • Assessing risk, making assessments, and documenting case notes
  • Supervising program rollouts, and coordinating with other staff
  • Continuously developing networks with Serco staff and community-based networks

What you need to succeed

  • Education, criminology, and/or social work qualifications
  • Ample practical experience working in a related field
  • Professional and warm written and verbal communication skills
  • Understanding the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders
  • Relating well to culturally or linguistically diverse people
  • Professional relationships with parents, carers, corrective services personnel
  • Clear Working With Children and Criminal Record Checks
  • A current driver’s licence and able to provide transport support (if needed)
