ABOUT THE ROLE

This exciting role offers the chance to work on a range of in-house matters whilst making a positive social impact. The Legal Counsel is critical to the operative function of the SSI Legal Team and will advise on the majority of SSI’s legal matters. The Legal Counsel’s duties include working on legal matters, providing ongoing ‘business partner’ type support to different areas of the business, and assisting the SSI Senior Legal Counsel with other team-wide tasks and projects.
The Legal Counsel will also participate in team tasks, including contributing to preparing and delivering legal education within the organisation, contributing to monthly reports, and other BAU tasks.

Key responsibilities include –

  • Legal advice – advise internal management and business partners on key areas of legal and compliance risk across all areas of the organisation;
  • Draft and review legal documents, and prepare legal templates where necessary;
  • Review organisational and departmental policies and procedures to ensure compliance with legal, legislative and contractual requirement;
  • Review and communicate legal changes – Keep the organisation informed in relation to State and Federal legislation and regulations relevant to SSI’s operations;
  • Manage and undertake special projects as required such as investigations, training staff in legal compliance, ensuring compliance with government contracts and frameworks;
  • Participate in due diligence projects to assess legal and compliance implications of joint ventures, new businesses and other projects as needed;
  • Support the compliance process of all existing and prospective contracts, including performing legal audits.

Other duties as directed from time to time within your skills range and capacity.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

The successful candidate will ideally have:

  • Law degree with 4-6 years post qualification experience;
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a commercial lawyer or relevant experience as an in-house lawyer;
  • Deep understanding of legal principles (including how to apply them and relevant laws practically to legal work), and strong analytical skills;
  • Excellent written communication skills with the demonstrated ability to explain legal documents and/or advice in plain English.
  • Well-developed verbal and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to consult and negotiate effectively at senior levels;
  • Well-developed organisational skills together with the ability to manage priorities and meet deadlines and timeframes;
  • Ability to take initiative and think outside the box in order to reach practical solutions;
  • Experience in NFP sector and general litigation and/or public and administrative law experience is desirable.
