WestCASA is a community based not-for-profit sexual assault, family violence and trauma counselling service operating in the western metropolitan region of Melbourne for over 30 years. WestCASA provides counselling, a crisis response, advocacy, education and training and is located in Werribee, with outreaches at Footscray, Melton, Wyndham and the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre (DPFC, a women’s prison) at Deer Park.

About the role

We are looking for a Counsellor/Advocate to join our after hours Crisis Care Unit. WestCASA provides a 24-hour response to recent sexual assaults, in partnership with the Sexual Assault Crisis Line (SACL), Western Health (Sunshine Hospital) and Victoria Police, SOCIT (Sexual Offences & Child Abuse Investigation Team) and the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medication (VIFM).

The Counsellor/Advocate on the after-hours team will provide a coordinated response outside business hours at the Sunshine Hospital. (Please see Job description). The after-hours team member may be expected to attend other hospitals in the western region, as well as Sunshine Hospital.

The successful applicant will be on call (on the after-hours roster) a minimum of four shifts per month. After-hours Counsellor/Advocates will provide services Monday to Friday between 5:00 pm to 9:00 am and Saturday to Sunday (24-hour shifts), including public holidays. Successful Counsellor/Advocates are expected to provide crisis care support and advocacy for the victim/survivor while liaising with WestCASA partners; SOCIT, VIFM and Western Health. Counsellor/Advocates are expected to attend monthly 2-hour meetings (first Tuesday of each month). The Crisis Care Coordinator will provide clinical support/supervision on an as needs basis.

WestCASA supports staff to develop capacities in relation to knowledge of current best practice in responding to complex trauma. WestCASA provides services within a feminist and rights-based framework.

WestCASA is a not-for-profit organisation with a community-based Board of Governance and is a member of the state-wide peak organisation of sexual assault services, CASA Forum. Services are funded by the Victorian Government.

The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to and understanding of the personal and political issues surrounding sexual assault & family violence. You will have experience or a strong interest in working with complex trauma in a therapeutic environment.

You will be an excellent communicator, able to work independently and contribute to a resilient team.
