We have a dynamic and nimble organisational culture and we’re serious about supporting our people to thrive. About the role

ABOUT THE ROLE

We have a unique opportunity for a lawyer to support the delivery of a number of key compliance and risk management projects for The Sunrise Project as it scales its structures and operations over the next 6 months. You’ll create plans, policies, templates and training that help us scale our mission effectively and manage compliance in the global locations where we are operating.

You’ll need to be solutions-focused, flexible, a problem-solver and super-organised. Working with our General Counsel and Paralegal you will be supported to deliver a range of priority project-based tasks, so developing a deep understanding of the context we’re operating quickly is going to make a big difference.

You’ll have worked as a practicing lawyer in commercial and corporate law. You will also have spent time working or volunteering for a charity or not-for-profit, ideally as an in-house advisor. You can draft a great plain-language contract, wrap your head around collaborative ways of working at the global level, and get up to speed quickly on a range of scaling-related topics. You will also be interested in learning and development, and up for co-delivering information awareness raising and training sessions to help skill up our workforce and networks.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supporting the General Counsel/Company Secretary to manage key projects including providing advice on a range of legal and governance topics including the rollout of new systems and processes to respond to identified risks
  • Developing plans, policies and procedures to ensure organisational compliance and good governance with reference to standards and requirements under Australian law and in relevant foreign jurisdictions
  • Being the first port of call for legal queries on contract management and partner collaborations as examples
  • Preparing reports, presentations and training content
  • Applying a strategic and creative mindset to help upscale the organisation through good governance and legal compliance.

KEY SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Qualified Australian legal practitioner with post-admission experience, ideally in a similar role
  • Experience in one of more of the following areas of legal practice, ideally within an international and/or not-for-profit context:
    • drafting contracts and other agreements
    • workplace issues including health and safety and/or employment law
    • regulatory compliance for charities in relation to tax, electoral laws and other regimes affecting groups engaged in advocacy
    • corporate governance relating to organisational policies and procedures eg safeguarding, financials, and risk management
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to translate complex legal concepts into practical guidance for non-legal audiences
  • Ability to work well under time pressure and manage expectations
  • Experience or ability in creating legal training content and guidance materials
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communications skills and a high level of emotional intelligence
  • Project management and administration skills and experience
  • Ability to understand and attune to a scaling mission-driven organisational context
  • A passion for action on climate change and a commitment to social justice.
